Baseball: Brooklawn wins World Series

By Phil Anastasia

Brooklawn won its second consecutive American Legion World Series baseball title in emphatic fashion on Tuesday night.

The team representing Post 72 in the tiny town in Camden County jumped to a 10-0 lead after three innings and cruised to an 18-0 victory over Midland, Mich., in the championship game in Shelby, N.C.

Tyler Mondile pitched a five-hitter and Tre Todd and Johnny Malatesta each drove in three runs for Brooklawn (54-7).

Pete Farlow added two hits and two RBIs, walked three times and scored three runs for the New Jersey state and Mid-Atlantic Regional champions.

The World Series title was the fourth for Brooklawn, which also won crowns in 1991, 2001 and 2013. The team was making its fourth straight appearance in the World Series and 16th overall.

Brooklawn played this season with patches with "Pop" on the front of team jerseys in honor of team founder and long-time former coach Joe Barth, who died in February at the age of 91.

"This one's for you, Pop," the team said on its Twitter account shortly after the game.

Barth's son Dennis, the head coach at Rutgers Camden, has been the team's coach for its last two World Series titles.

Brooklawn batters walked 15 times in the game, which ended after Midland's at-bat in the top of the seventh inning because of the 10-run rule. Brooklawn also took advantage of four Midland errors.

Mondile, a right-hander who will begin his junior year at Gloucester Catholic in September, struck out five with one walk. He threw 78 pitches, 57 for strikes.

Todd, a catcher entering his senior year at Gloucester Catholic, delivered a two-run single to highlight a four-run, first-inning rally in which four of Brooklawn's first five batters walked.

Malatesta, a left-fielder and recent Vineland graduate, walked twice and scored a run.

Second baseman Sean Breen, a rising senior at Gloucester Catholic, was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Brooklawn won its final eight games after a loss to Cecil County, Md., in pool play in the Mid-Atlantic Regional at Campbell's Field. The team went 5-0 in World Series play.
