Football: Training camp confidential: Cinnaminson

By Phil Anastasia

Training camp confidential: Cinnaminson

Coach: Mario Patrizi

Last year: 8-2, won WJFL Patriot, lost to Bridgeton in first round of SJ 2 tourney

Schedule: at Robbinsville, at Willingboro, Bordentown, Hamilton West, at Holy Cross, at Lawrence, bye, at Burlington City, Pemberton, Delran (Thanksgiving)

Player to watch: Senior Nick Thevanayagam (pictured). The 6-0, 195-pound Thevanayagam is perhaps the best athlete in the WJFL Patriot. He's a three-year starter at quarterback and also a top defensive back. He's a dual threat who can throw and run. Cinnaminson will use a lot of zone read this season to take advantage of Thevanayagam's speed, skill and decision-making ability. He's leaning toward attending Princeton although Villanova and Delaware are in the recruiting mix. "It all starts with the QB and we have a great one," Patrizi said.

Outlook: Cinnaminson has won 22 games, captured three division titles and made three playoff appearances in the last three years. The Pirates should be right there again this season with a squad that features top two-way senior lineman Chris Cintron (6-1, 215) as well as dangerous skill-position players such as senior RB Aaron Elly (6-0, 180) and sophomore WR/DB Shaun Davilla (6-2, 180), a likely future D-1 recruit. Among the other players to watch are senior WR/SS Pete Selnek (6-1, 200), senior two-way lineman Samaj Diggs (6-2, 220), senior C/LB Zach Sireci (6-1, 210), senior two-way end Ryan Hanratty (6-5, 210) and soph two-way lineman Keith Swartley (6-3, 280).

Fast fact: Cinnaminson moves to Central Jersey Group 2 this season. That's not bad news, given the depth of power in SJ 2.

Quote: "The sky's the limit for this team. We're going for the Central Jersey 2 championship. Anything less and we didn't do our job," Thevanayagam said.
