Baseball: DeCastro new coach at Paul VI

Marc DeCastro has been named the new head baseball coach at Paul VI High School.

DeCastro, a star player at Paul VI who graduated in 2002, replaces Pat Fisher.

"It's a special place to me and my family," DeCastro said. "I had three older brothers that went there and then I came along.  It's been part of my family for more than 30 years."

DeCastro works for Comcast in the finance department and said he will be able to tailor his schedule to make practices and games. He has been coaching since his junior year at Montclair State, when he took over the junior program at the Haddon Heights American Legion program.

For the last few years, DeCastro has been working with his father, Mike, with the Haddon Heights senior program.  Mike DeCastro is the longtime coach at Haddon Heights.

DeCastro, 30, played four years of varsity baseball under Paul VI coach Tony Mitchell, now the school's athletic director.

DeCastro hopes to build a program that is a consistent winner.

"The No. 1 thing you have to do is develop," DeCastro said. "You look at the better programs, they develop players.  You have to take a Freshman class and turn them into varsity players as juniors.

"The other thing is you have to develop pitching. You have to have 2-3 good pitchers every year.

"I've always believed if you pitch is well and catch it behind them, you are going to win a lot of games."
