Adopt-a-Mate?

It's a dog-eat-dog world out there on the single dating scene

No matter how much space you get to write a story, there's almost always more you could say.

There were several details that just didn't work their way into today's column on Diane Peters, a pretty, never-married, 44-year-old who's is looking for her special man, the lid for her pot, the whole romantic "other half" thing. In my view, she's a catch.

She did what she shouldn't have, went to a dating service that (she later learned) has a shady history. It's easy to condemn her if you are in a happy, stable relationship. I don't know of many people who found their "other half" on the first shot. I thought I had found mine, several times, but I was wrong.

Like Diane, I tried recommendations from friends, hanging out in bars (not always the best option for women) and online dating, which never produced lasting results. Kind of like taking aspirin for a migraine. I met some nice women, but not "the" woman.

OK, the part of the story I didn't use in the column. Diane is a dog lover, which gives her extra points with me. She is the guardian of Scruff, a 10-year-old cocker spaniel she adopted from a shelter. I give her more extra credit for adopting a homeless dog. Much better to adopt than buy, especially from a "pet shop." Those dogs are usually from puppy mills.

Diana loves Scruff and I'm sure the love is returned because that's what dogs do, and are. Diane would love to find a man as loyal and devoted as Scruff.

Now I'm thinking wouldn't it be great if there were adoption agencies where we could go to pick out a mate. (Please, no remarks that all men are dogs. Some aren't.)
