Baseball: Gatto agrees to contract with Angels

By Phil Anastasia

Recent St. Augustine Prep graduate Joey Gatto has agreed to contract terms with the Los Angeles Angels.

"The decision has been made," Gatto tweeted Thursday night.

Reports indicated that Gatto will sign for $1.2 million. That's above the bonus-allotment for the 53d pick of $1.0506 million.

Gatto, a right-handed pitcher, is expected to start his career this summer with the Angels' rookie team in the Arizona League in Tempe, Ar.

Gatto was 7-1 with an 0.94 ERA for St. Augustine last season. The 6-5, 215-pound athlete won his final four games, throwing four consecutive complete games and allowing a total of two runs.

Gatto, who lives in Hammonton, said the day after he was drafted that it was "amazing" to be joining the organization that features former Millville player Mike Trout as its franchise player.

Gatto had signed with the University of North Carolina but has opted to pursue his professional career.
