Baseball: Full slate of Thursday playoffs
Wednesday's rain, which caused the postponement of four area baseball playoff games, has left a full slate for Thursday.
District 12 will hold a tripleheader at Richie Ashburn Field in South Philly, beginning at 11 a.m. with Wednesday's postponed Class AA final between Neumann-Goretti and Philadelphia Academy Charter. That will be followed by La Salle vs. George Washington (AAAA) and, in the nightcap, Archbishop Wood vs. Franklin Towne Charter.
According to District 1 chairman Steve Mescanti, the sites for three district playoffs, including a pair of championships, will be determined Thursday morning after determining the condition of four possible venues: Glen Mills, Immaculata University, Neumann University, and Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth.
In District 1 finals Thursday, No. 6 seed Harriton will take on No. 4 Pope John Paul (AAA), and No. 6 Calvary Christian will face No. 1 Devon Prep (A). Both were postponed Wednesday.
The District 1 AAAA semifinal between Conestoga and Methacton is slated to resume Thursday. When it was halted Tuesday due to lightning, the Pioneers were ahead, 3-1, in the top of the fifth inning. The Warriors have the bases loaded with no outs and cleanup man Kyle Lowery due up.
The Conestoga-Methacton victor will take on Boyertown, which handed Pioneer Athletic Conference rival Spring-Ford a 6-0 defeat in a Tuesday semifinal at Immaculata, in a AAAA title game tentatively scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday in Plymouth.
The winner of the District 12 AA final between Neumann-Goretti and Philadelphia Academy Charter will earn an automatic berth in the state playoffs. The loser will play District 1 representative Springfield (Montco) on Friday, with a site and time to be determined, for a berth in the tourney.
The state tournament, for all four classes, is scheduled to begin Monday.
