Baseball: New Top 20

By Phil Anastasia

Here's the new Top 20 in South Jersey baseball for Sunday, May 11 (previous ranking in parentheses)

1. Bishop Eustace (1) 20-1

Junior Nick Browne, who recently committed to Maryland, has five HRs since April 28. As a team, the Crusaders have hit 32: Browne (10), Mike Krusinski (7), Chris Jones (5), Ryan DiMeo (4), Devin Smeltzer (2), Steve DeBellis (2), Dan Marano (1), Justin Hagenman (1). BE has won eight games in a row.

2. Pennsville (2) 17-1

Senior Eric Lankeneau has hit all seven of his HRs in the Eagles' last 11 games. Josh Shimp leads Pennsville with 19 extyra-base hits (13 doubles, 6 HRs), while Drew Burdsall has 7 doubles.

3. NBC (4) 17-3

Junor Tyler O'Dell has 7 doubles and 4 pitching wins. The Greyhounds got great work from senior LHP Zach Gakeler in a 10-0 win over Haddonfield in the first round of the Diamond Classic on Saturday. NBC meets Pennsville in a big quarterfinal Saturday morning at Washington Twp.

4. Gloucester Catholic (3) 16-5

The Rams have allowed two runs in the last five games. One of them was a 1-0 loss to Audubon in Saturday's first-round of the Diamond Classic. It marked the third year in a row the Rams lost in their opener in the tournament, and all three games, oddly enough, were at Maple Shade.

5. St. Augustine (6) 15-4

Senior RHP Joey Gatto is 4-1 with a 1.56 ERA and 43 Ks in 31.3 innings. He went 7 and allowed one earned run in a 5-2 win over Clearview in Saturday's Diamond Classic opener. He likely will take the hill against Audubon in the quarterfinals Saturday morning at Deptford.

6. Washington Twp. (5) 15-5

Junior RHP Chris Haruch struck out 8 in 6 innings in a 7-1 win over Moorestown in the first round of the Diamond on Saturday. WT can earn a share of the Olympic American title when Cherokee comes to town Monday afternoon.

7. Cherokee (14) 12-7

The Chiefs have won 8 in a row. They can win the Olympic American title outright with a win over Washington Township on Monday. They would be quite an accomplishment for a team that was 4-7 after getting no-hit by NBC on April 21.

8. Moorestown (8) 12-5

The Quakers visit Holy Cross in the semifinals of the BCL tournament on Monday.

9. Audubon (15) 14-6
The Green Wave has won four in a row, outscoring opponents 21-3. Senior RHP Kevin Terifay was terrific in a 1-0 win over GC on Saturday in the first round of the Diamond, limiting the Rams to five singles.

10. Cinnaminson (12) 13-6

The Pirates will meet the Moorestown-Holy Cross winner in the BCL tourney title game Wednesday night at Bordentown. Seniors Christian Deluca (8 doubles, 3 HRs) and Cody MacNair (4 HRs) park the Pirates' heavy-hitting attack.

11. Haddonfield (9) 14-4

The Bulldogs have won five Colonial Conference games in a row to take command of the Liberty Division race.

12. Hammonton (7) 10-6

Senior Justin Smith has four pitching wins and three HRs.

13. Clearview (13) 13-3

The Pioneers looks like the No. 1 seed in the SJ Group 4 tournament and they have the edge in the Tri-County Royal race after wins over Williamstown and Delsea late last week.

14. Cherry Hill East (NR) 14-8

The Cougars have won four of five, capped by a rally for a 4-3 win over Camden Catholic on Saturday.

15. Camden Catholic (17) 10-6

Senior SS Joey Craig rapped two HRs on Saturday -- one against CHE, one in a win over Germantown Friends.

16. Cedar Creek (10) 14-4

Senior Jon Newman has 7 doubles for the Pirates, who beat Williamstown by a 4-3 score in the Diamond opener on Saturday.

17. Buena (19) 11-4

Junior Denny Brady struck out 17 in a 3-1 win over Vineland on Saturday.

18. Holy Spirit (18) 13-4

Mike Dilanni has 5 pitching wins for the Spartans.

19. Rancocas Valley (16) 10-7

Freshman Tyler Deardon has four pitching wins for the Red Devils.

20. Holy Cross (NR) 12-6

Senior Colin Stringham has four pitching wins and six HRs for the Lancers.

Under consideration: Absegami (10-5), Delsea (10-6), Egg Harbor (12-10), Vineland (12-5), Williamstown (10-8).
