Football: WJFL releases 2014-15 schedule

By Phil Anastasia

New WJFL member Hammonton will face Group 5 teams Washington Township and Williamstown in cross-over games and will not play on Thanksgiving, according to the schedule for 2014-15 that the league released on Monday.

Hammonton, a Group 4 program that will join the WJFL in September after years in the Cape-Atlantic, will compete in the National Division with Timber Creek, Delsea, Clearview, Kingsway and Pennsauken.

Hammonton will play Washington Twp. in Week 2 and Williamstown in Week 8. Hammonton also will play Moorestown and Cherry Hill West in cross-over games.

Hammonton, which has played cross-town rival St. Joseph on Thanksgiving weekend since 1962, will not have a Thanksgiving weekend game.

According to St. Joseph coach Paul Sacco, St. Joseph also will not have a Thanksgiving game, although there was speculation that St. Joe would play St. Augustine on the holiday weekend. That game is expected to be on opening day.

The WFJL shook up its divisions and created some new cross-over games for the 2014-15 seasons. The league was formed in 2010.

Shawnee, a new member of the American Division, will face Cherry Hill West (Week 2), Moorestown (Week 4) and Clearview (Week 8) in cross-over games in addition to division games against the likes of Cherokee, Williamstown, Eastern and Washington Twp.

Perenniel power Timber Creek will face Hammonton and Delsea in National play and also will meet perenniel power Cherokee, the defending Group 5 champion, in a cross-over game in Week 2, and will face Washington Township in Week 4. TC also will meet Moorestown (Week 6).

Two-time SJ 3 champion Delsea, which jumped two divisions to the National, will play Camden in Week 2, Paul VI in Week 4, Eastern in Week 6 and Triton in Week 8 in cross-over games while also meeting Timber Creek, Hammonton, Clearview, Kingsway and Pennsauken in division play.

Defending Group 1 champion Glassboro will play Camden (Week 6) and Bishop Eustace (Week 8) in crossover games.

Camden, which went 10-1 last season, will play Delsea (Week 2), Glassboro (Week 6) and Penns Grove (Week 8) in crossover games.

Camden Catholic vs. Delran, Bishop Eustace vs. Burlington City, Woodstown vs. Maple Shade, Eastern vs. Northern Burlington, Pitman vs. New Egypt, Gloucester Catholic vs. Palmyra, Cherokee vs. Rancocas Valley, Paul VI vs. both Delsea and Kingsway, and Williamstown vs. Pennsauken are some of the other new crossover games.

The schedule will be the same in 2014 and 2015, with teams alternating home and away sites.
