Basketball: PVI's Risse to James Madison

By Phil Anastasia

Paul VI senior forward Matt Risse has committed to attend James Madison University to play basketball.

The 6-foot-5 Risse, a three-year starter and four-year varsity player, said Thursday that he will attend the school as a preferred walk-on.

Risse said he will red-shirt his freshman year, practicing with the team while not on scholarship. He said he will receive a scholarship starting in his second year and will be able to play four years in the program.

Risse plans to major in business.

Risse said he was excited to play again with JMU sophomore guard Ron Curry, a 2012 Paul VI graduate.

JMU is coached by 1983 Paul VI graduate Matt Brady.

"It's a great school," Risse said of JMU, which is located in Harrisonburg, Va.

Risse was a starter as a sophomore and junior for Paul VI teams that went a combined 52-8 with a pair of Olympic Conference National Division titles as well as a pair of appearances in the Non-Public South A title game.
