Football: Prus leads Woodstown

Nathan Prus said the seniors on the Woodstown offensive and defensive lines barely need to talk to each other before the snap of the football.

"It's almost like we don't need signals anymore," Prus said. "We know each other so well. We all know where we're supposed to be and what we're supposed to do.

"We're a big family and we're winning because of it."

The 6-foot-1, 240-pound Prus has been the leader on both sides of the football for Woodstown (4-0), the No. 21 team in The Inquirer Top 25.

Woodstown coach John Adams said Prus has been "all but unblockable" as a tackle for a defense that has allowed 16 points all season.

The Wolverines' defense has been even better than its 4.0-points-per-game average. Woodstown's first-string has allowed just eight points -- that was Sept. 13 in a 28-8 win over Highland -- and the Wolverines are coming off consecutive shutouts of perennial powers Glassboro (15-0) and Penns Grove (9-0).

"I knew after last year that we would have a good season," said Prus, whose brother Jake is a red-shirt freshman lineman at Villanova. "We brought a lot of guys back and we were so determined."

Prus plays center on an offensive line with five senior starters in the Wolverines' Veer option system. He is one of 21 seniors on a team that is 17-8 since the start of the 2011 season.

Woodstown defense will face the big challenge on Friday night, as the Wolverines will host No. 25 Pennsville (4-0), which is averaging 46 points in its no-huddle, spread attack.

"We have to be ready for bubbles and screens," Prus said. "We know what they like to do. We're excited about it."
