Football: Foley knew record would fall

By Phil Anastasia

Kevin Foley is surprised his record lasted for 22 seasons.

"With all these teams playing spread systems, I thought it would be broken before this," said Foley, who set the South Jersey record for passing yards in a career with 5,928 in 1991. "I guess I hung around at the top longer than I thought."

Foley's record is likely to be broken Friday night by Pennsville's Dylan Cummings, who will enter play with 5,873 yards.

Foley played for some high-powered Cherry Hill East teams that featured top receivers such as Erik Henry and Tom Suvansri.

Foley was part of a great era in CH East football history. The Cougars won the SJ Group 4 title in 1988 behind Foley's brother, Glenn, who later starred at Boston College and played in the NFL.

When Kevin Foley was a junior, CH East lost in the 1990 SJ 4 final to Cherokee by a 10-7 score.

Foley said the Cougars ran the Philadelphia Eagles' old offensive system under the direction of offensive coordinator Joe Pisarcik, the former Eagles backup quarterback.

"I never took a shotgun snap in my career," said Foley, who played college football at the University of Maryland as well as Boston University.

Foley is an Emmy Award-winning senior coordinating producer for Nascar. He lives in the Charlotte, N.C., area with his wife and newborn son.

Eastern senior quarterback Tom Flacco also is likely to pass Foley's career mark in the next couple of weeks.

"I'm fading away," Foley said with a laugh. "I'm extremely proud of these guys. I'm proud of my accomplishments and I'm happy to see these guys doing so well."
