Football: Custis commits to Syracuse

Neumann-Goretti's Jamal Custis, a 6-foot-6, 225-pound senior wide receiver, committed Sunday to play his college football at Syracuse.

"Ever since last year, they've been in constant contact with me," he said. "I really felt a lot of love from them."
Custis, also a standout basketball player, visited Syracuse last month. He chose the Orangemen over runners-up Pittsburgh and Virginia.

"The other things I liked about Syracuse were the campus and their coaches," he said. "The coaches were down to earth, really likable."

Custis, who doubles as a free safety for the Saints, also had scholarship offers from Central Florida, Connecticut, Rutgers, and Temple, among others.

The 17-year-old from Grays Ferry says he has the "option" of trying to also be walk-on player for Syracuse's basketball squad. "It's something I'd like to do," he said.

Custis joins La Salle senior linebacker Zaire Franklin in committing to the Orangemen for football.
