Pettibone relieved about MRI; uncertain about return

Phillies righthander Jonathan Pettibone said he was relieved by the results from a Thursday MRI on his shoulder, but he was also going to shut things down for a yet to be determined period.

Pettibone has been on the disabled list since Aug. 2 with a right shoulder strain. He has made two rehab starts, the most recent on Tuesday for Lehigh Valley.

"The (MRI) results came back showing inflammation as it was before," Pettibone said following Thursday's 5-4 win over the visiting Colorado Rockies. "I wanted to make sure it wasn't more."

Even though he was encouraged by the results, Pettibone will be out indefinitely.

"It is nothing serious, but it is going to take time," He said." They gave me six days (rest) at first and it wasn't enough. It was kind of mild inflammation and it never really went away once I picked up with activities and throwing."

In his first rehab start he threw 72 pitches for Double-A Reading on Aug 15. During his second start on Tuesday at Lehigh Valley, he threw six innings and 68 pitches.

At this point, Pettibone isn't sure whether he will come back this season. He has thrown 100 1/3 innings for the Phillies and 22 1/3 in the minors.

"If you shut it down too long, then you got to build it back up," he said. "It depends how much time I need and how much time is left in the season."
