Baeball: Ockimey set for USA Baseball tryout

Getting ready to compete for a spot on USA Baseball's 18-and-under national squad, Neumann-Goretti's Josh Ockimey is in North Carolina for the prestigious Tournament of Champions.

Ockimey, a hard-slugging first baseman and Arkansas commit, was one of 144 players selected to compete in the event at the national training complex at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C., from June 19-23.

At the end of the Tournament of Champions, USA Baseball will announce 40 finalists for the 18U trials Aug. 26-22 in Los Angeles. The final 20-player roster will be announced Aug. 22.

From Aug. 30-Sept. 8, the 18U team will participate in the IBAF World Cup in Taichung, Taiwan.

Alumni of USA Baseball's 18U national program include Paul Konerko, Mike Mussina, John Smoltz, Joe Mauer, Delmon Young, Justin Upton, Luke Hochevar, and Bryce Harper.

Ockimey recently completed his junior season at Neumann-Goretti. He was a first-team all-Catholic League Blue Division pick.
