Basketball: Malvern Prep announces resignation of Rullo

Malvern Prep issued an e-mail Monday announcing the resignation of head basketball coach Jim Rullo.

It said in the e-mail that Rullo was leaving to become the head men's coach at Neumann University. But Rullo, reached early Monday afternoon, said, "I haven't decided anything yet. I have a couple of options out there."

Malvern Prep athletic director Kurt Ruch said Rullo, in a series of e-mails, stepped down as coach last week, with Rullo giving him "the green light" to post his resignation as early as Monday.

Of the reports of his taking the Neumann job, Rullo said, "I think there has been a rush to judgment there." He added, "I have been contacted" about the position.

Neumann University athletic director Chuck Sack could not be immediately reached.

Joe Rapczynski, formerly the head coach at Garnet Valley, served as Neumann's interim coach at the end of the 2012-13 season, replacing Lenny Stanziano.

Ruch said Rullo recently coached the Friars in a weekend tournament and is scheduled to run a camp from June 24 to 27, for boys and girls ages 6 to 14, at Malvern Prep at the end of the month.

When asked about his future plans, Rullo said he would likely make a decision "by the middle to the end of this week."

In seven seasons with the Friars, Rullo has compiled a record of 135-67 (.668 winning percentage).

When Ruch was asked if Rullo could reverse his earlier decision and stay on as coach, he sad, "Yes. In no way would I want to lose him."
