Football: Angerstein new coach at Winslow Twp.

By Phil Anastasia

Russell Angerstein, a long-time assistant coach who has been out of the game for eight years, has been named head coach at Winslow Township.

Angerstein, 56, replaces Calvin Thompson, who resigned after two seasons. Winslow Township was 0-10 last season.

"I've got a great group of seniors who have stayed together through tough times," Angerstein said. "They want to win. They're working hard to improve."

Angerstein has been a history teacher at Edgewood/Winslow since 1979. He was an assistant coach for the school's football program from 1979-2001, serving under coaches Gary Walter, Bob Lee, Bob Bernardo and Derryk Sellers.

Angerstein also was an assistant coach under Tim McAneney at Bishop Eustace from 2003-05.

He has not coached since 2005.

"I missed it a lot," said Angerstein, who spent much of the time following his son's football career. "I wanted to get back into it."

Angerstein is a Woodrow Wilson graduate. He played under Joe Corbi and Sam Rosetti at Wilson.

He was an offensive tackle for Widener when the school won the Division III national title in 1979.

"I've played and coached under some great coaches," Angerstein said.

He hopes to restore the "pride" in a program that has fallen on some tough times in recent years.

"We have a great group of kids," Angerstein said of Winslow. "They want to bring back the pride in this program."

Angerstein said he has most of his coaching staff in place. He said a few coaches who were members of Thompson's staff will remain with the program.
