Scouting Roy Halladay

Roy Halladay faced hitter for the first time this spring. Two players with a combined 12 All-Star appearances give their analysis.

After a week in Clearwater, this much in certain: every step Roy Halladay takes this spring will be scrutinized.

It was this time last year, after all, that Halladay first showed signs that something wasn't right. Not long after he faced hitters in Grapefruit League play, scouts wondered about Halladay's velocity and movement and questioned where the late life went on his fastball.

Flash forward a year later, after Halladay endured an injury-plagued 2012 season an offseason of rebuilding and recovery. For the first time in 2013, Halladay faced hitters this morning at the Carpenter Complex.

Included in those hitters were two guys with impressive career resumes of their own, Chase Utley and Michael Young.

Here is each of their scouting reports on Halladay:

Utley: "He looked good. He had a little life on his fastball – i know it's the first time – but it's always good to see a little extra life on the end of his fastball. It was good. it was crisp. He had a little giddy-up at the end. He threw some cutters, some changeups. Located them pretty well. I imagine he's pretty happy with how it went."

Young: "He looked great. He looked like Roy Halladay. That was the Roy Halladay I remember seeing all those years in the American League. Everything was down in the zone, it had some zip, it was coming out of his hand really nice. I thought he looked great."
