Bynum receiving previously scheduled injections

POSTED: Thursday, January 31, 2013, 12:20 PM

Center Andrew Bynum was in New York on Thursday to receive two previously scheduled Synvisc injections in both knees with Dr. David Altchek. The 76ers said that they expect Bynum to return to rehabilitation and basketball related activities next week possibly as soon as Sunday.

Synvisc is a joint lubricant that provides relief in his knees.

Bynum had mentioned months ago that he had planned to receive the injections sometime around the all-star break. The NBA all-star game is Sunday, Feb. 17.

The Sixers had a brief workout in preparation for Friday’ game at the Wells Fargo Center against the Sacrament Kings.

Bynum has been with the team doing basket related activities. There is no set timetable for his return.

In addition, guard Jason Richardson was in Colorado today receiving a second opinion on his left knee. Richardson has missed the last five games. He had fluid drained from the knee on Jan 17 and played 27 minutes the next day against Toronto. That was his last appearance.

Sixers forward Damien Wilkins, who missed Wednesday’s 92-84 win over Washington due to personal reasons, wasn’t at practice Thursday for the same reason.

FROM THE SYNVISC SITE.(been using this on race horses for many-many years)--

Synvisc-One supplements your knee joint fluid to relieve the pain and improve the knee joint’s natural shock absorbing abilities.

    A. Cartilage wears away B. Bone spurs may develop C. Joint fluid breaks down
    D. Synvisc-One replaces joint fluid

Patients with knee osteoarthritis who have tried diet, exercise and over-the-counter pain medication but still have pain, should talk to their doctor to see if Synvisc-One is right for them.

    How Synvisc-One is administered
Synvisc-One is a single injection. It’s a simple, in-office procedure that only takes a few minutes.

What you can expect following a Synvisc-One knee injection
Synvisc-One can provide up to six months of osteoarthritis knee pain relief. Everyone responds differently, but in a medical study* patients experienced relief starting one month after the injection.

After the injection, you can resume normal day-to-day activities, but you should avoid any strenuous activities for about 48 hours.

There goes the assertion from Tony Dileo that he would probably start practicing with the team by Feb 1.

Well at least this should make his return seamless without any waiting from the 48 hours they recommend in your post HO HUM. I'd much rather him do the injections now, see how he handles them (which shouldn't be an issue) and maybe this helps speed up his recovery. In recent weeks it's seemed as if his recovery has been at a steady level. Would love to see him make his return slightly before all-star break so he can see how he handles game play and rest right after a couple games.

On another note Rudy Gay got traded to Toronto, Calderon to Detroit Prince etc to Memphis. Reports are that Atlanta is looking to trade Josh Smith. Will we remain on the outside looking in? Could we involve a Thad deal to get Smith? Thad & Kwame for Smith. Atlanta would have him under contract for 2 more seasons with a player option in 2015 and could move Kwame as an expiring next summer. I know it sounds like dreaming. I was considering including Wright but that would weaken our SF spot. We get a solid PF to shore up the team with Bynum out and try the combo of Smith/Bynum until summer. It doesn't work out and we get $13 million in cap space this summer and could try for Millsap or Jefferson. I love Thad's game but this could leave us further open to making huge deals in the summer to build this team even better.

Mattb at this point 48 hours to help improve his knees isn't going to hurt the time-table too much. It actually might help speed up his recovery time which has picked up the pace in the last few weeks. I still expect him around the All-Star game a few games before or a few after.

After hearing Bynum give his latest update, I don't think he wants to return until after the break. Not sure if he thinks his conditioning won't be ready - or if he wants to just come back strong. Either way, seems like so far so good with his progress.

Hopefully it works out better than the last injection he got

Bynum doesn't care when he plays again. Neither do I.

I miss Ruland, Cliff Robinson and Roy Hinson. The best front line ever assembled.

The teams involved in the pre-season trade, Orlando, Denver, Los Angelas and Philly have not faired that well except for Denver who is about where they were last year. They might actually be better in a late-game situation during the playoffs because their pick-up of Iquadala was not meant to make them much better during the regular season or score more but to be able to shut down a big time scorer when the games really count. That may not show up until a seven game series. If Philly gets back Bynum they are much better off than LA or Orlando, at least for the immediate future. Orlando may have the upside longterm, but only if Bynum does not recover or does not re-sign. But financially Philly is in good shape regardless unless they sign Bynum and then due to injury cannot justify a long-term contract.

This guy needs knee replacements, not injections. Sixers are a joke of an organization

It's hard to understand how the sixers missed Bynum's bad knee problems. Didn't they get an MRI and see him workout before agreeing to what appears to be a disastrous deal for them.
