Basketball: New Top 10

Here's the first live Top 10 of the boys' basketball season, with preseason ranking in parentheses:

1. Atlantic City (1) 2-0
The Vikings' 6-4 senior forward, Ga-briel Chandler, is off to a strong start with 46 points in the first two games. He shot 14-for-18 from the floor and scored 29 in nice win over Medford Tech at the Ocean City PBA Tipoff Tournament on Saturday. Another good sign for the Vikings: 6-8 senior Jah-leem Montague, who sat out the opener with a sore knee, played a few minutes Saturday and threw down a couple dunks.

2. Paulsboro (2) 1-0
The Red Raiders got 32 from reigning Player of the Year Xavier Lundy in a 74-47 victory over Vineland in the season opener. Paulsboro burst to 24-5 lead after one quarter and never looked back in game at Jimmy V Showcase Saturday at Schalick.

3. Eastern (3) 1-0
The Vikings' big three of seniors Devon Bell and Avery Walker and junior Matt Klinewski combined for 57 points in a 73-58 victory over Winslow Township. Tough week ahead includes battles against No. 9 Camden Catholic at home on Tuesday and at Lenape on Thursday.

4. Paul VI (4) 1-0
Junior guard Dehvante Mosely, a transfer from Philadelphia power Neumann-Goretti, scored 11 in his debut for the Eagles in a 67-26 win over Seneca Friday night. The Eagles are hoping to have standout junior forward Matt Risse back in a couple of weeks. He's been out all through the preseason with an ankle injury. With Risse out and transfers Ivan Robinson and Alex Denko sitting out for 30 days, PVI could be a work in progress until February. Interesting game Friday at home vs. No. 9 Camden Catholic.

5. Holy Spirit (5) 1-0
Senior guard Paul Moore went for 25 in a 73-55 victory over Mainland Friday night. The Spartans are expecting big things from Junior Saintel, a 6-6 junior forward.

6. Shawnee (6) 2-0
The Renegades burst to a 20-2 lead in a victory over Absegami Sunday in the PBA Tipoff Tournament in Ocean City. Like PVI, Shawnee is at less than full strength as senior Jake Dean and sophomore Alec Warren are out with injuries.

7. Middle Township (8) 1-0
Senior guard Dorrell Shelton is a force at both ends of the floor for the Panthers. Big test Tuesday as rival St. Augustine Prep comes to Cape May Courthouse for a Cape National clash.

8. Haddonfield (9) 2-0
The Bulldogs made 13 three-pointers and sophomore guard Nick DePersia scored 22 points in a 81-46 victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday. That followed big win over Sterling on Friday as Haddonfield looks in mid-season form in mid-December.

9. Camden Catholic (10) 1-0
Junior guard Tom Organ made a trio of three-pointers in the first quarter of Friday night's 61-38 victory over Cherry Hill West. Big week for the Irish, who are hoping to bounce back from subpar (by their standards) season: At No. 3 Eastern on Tuesday and at No. 4 Paul VI on Friday. The battle with PVI has extra significance as the rivalry between the two non-public powers went to another level last summer when junior guard Ivan Robinson transferred from CC to PVI.

10. Camden (7) 1-1
The Panthers were down 44-41 when senior forward Amir Maddred (13 points) fouled out with four minutes, 46 seconds remaining in a 62-45 loss to Wings Academy (Bronx, N.Y.) in the Villa Classic, a New York vs. Philadelphia showcase Saturday at Arcadia University. Camden opened with 17-point win over Washington Township on Friday. Junior guard Tarvaris Headen and Maddred scored in double figures in both games for the Panthers.

Under consideration (listed alphabetically):

St. Augustine (2-0): Hermits are off to a good start behind senior backcourt of Mike Greenman and David Sullivan. Junior forwards Brian Seward and Joey Gatto make SA a little more athletic than they have been at times in the past.

In the mix:

Pitman (1-0): Tim Delaney and Eric Stafford are going to lead the Panthers to a lot of wins over the next two seasons.

Medford Tech (1-1): Soph Myles Powell emerging as top scorer to complement junior lead guard Elijah Cain.

Lenape (1-0): In senior forward Tabu Gaither, Indians have a go-to offensive threat.

Penns Grove (2-0): Senior forward Ge'Shawn Davis is averaging 25 and will lead the Group 1 Red Devils in an interesting clash with Group 4 Williamstown (1-0) on Monday afternoon.

Bishop Eustace (0-1): Crusaders were right there with Lenape in opener. They might be better than some people expect after losing four prominant seniors to graduation.
