Phil Sheridan became an Inquirer sports columnist after covering the Eagles for seven years. He brings a seasoned and reasoned point of view to a landscape of frustrated fans. But Sheridan knows where they're coming from, being a Philadelphia native and a graduate of Temple University.

There are two ways to look at how the last month has gone for the Phillies: the right way and the other right way. The Phillies are in first place, but they won't be able to stay there without shoring up their starting pitching.

The great player. The dysfunctional franchise. The ugly breakup. The change of scenery. Philadelphia is all-too-familiar with this all-too-common tale. This is the city that watched Reggie White, Keith Jackson and Seth Joyner leave the Eagles to escape from former owner Norman Braman. This is the city that watched Charles Barkley and then Allen Iverson reach their expiration dates as contented members of the 76ers.

It isn't hard to calculate how long the 76ers had gone since making a move as aggressive and promising as yesterday's signing of power forward Elton Brand.
In his own quiet way, Charlie Manuel yesterday made the case for help before the non-waiver trade deadline at the end of this month.
Say this about Ryan Howard. He's never boring. In another big game against the rival New York Mets last night, Howard was everything that makes fans wring their hands and clap their hands.
Charlie Manuel ran through his postgame checklist, as always. J.A. Happ starting the game? Check. Shane Victorino ending the game? Check.
ALLENTOWN - Welcome to the strangest minor-league rehabilitation assignment in recent memory. That's what this is for Brett Myers, after all. It's as if the Phillies got an MRI of his psyche, saw a second-degree strain in his S.C. (self-confidence) ligament, and sent him to triple A to pitch his way back into shape.
All the cheesesteaks at Ninth and Passyunk aren't going to mean a thing. Ed Stefanski knows that much. As president and general manager of the Sixers, Stefanski will order up the local foodstuffs when potential free agents visit. He'll spin the pressure of playing in Philadelphia as a positive, the happy by-product of passionate fans. He'll sell the city as a great place to live and, because he's a Philly guy, he'll be convincing.
It all seemed odd. The 76ers held a news conference yesterday to introduce first-round draft choice Marreese Speights. Nothing unusual there. Every team in every sport does exactly the same thing.
