It’s not cheap. But then, that’s the idea. When I told a colleague I was heading off to the spanking new, high-style Revel resort and casino in Atlantic City to check out the stayover experience, she looked at me with skeptical disdain."For $400 a night," she shot back, "I pretty much expect to have my feet kissed."

Women opting for the outdoors on their vacations

OCALA NATIONAL FOREST, Fla. — Erika Faulk and her cousin Gale Robinson could have met up for a weekend spa retreat or planned a shopping excursion, but the two middle-aged, suburban moms opted for a weekend learning to shoot guns, build campfires, and track deer deep in the Ocala National Forest. Faulk, Robinson, and about 100 other women were taking part in a three-day workshop called "Becoming an Outdoors-Woman." The program began two decades ago in Wisconsin and has spread to 40 states and Canada as a way to teach women the skills needed to enjoy outdoor activities. In Florida, three workshops are held in different parts of the state throughout the year. Organizers say the sessions are so popular, they usually fill up just days after they are announced.

Gadget Guru: Baby monitor good for trips

Lorex makes cutting-edge video-security systems for remote monitoring, often across multiple networks. The company’s newest video monitor thinks small — baby small. The Live View Video Baby Monitor lets caregivers keep an eye and ear on little ones, and with its light weight and easy interface, is a good bet for trips. The system can operate wirelessly, but the rechargeable battery life can vary between four and seven hours, depending on features in use, so you will feel most secure using the included wall adapters. Range is up to about 150 feet indoors, up to 450 feet outdoors, but obstructions can reduce the range substantially. The parent unit has a bright 2.4-inch LCD screen and a stand that doubles as a belt clip. In the dark, the camera switches to night vision. The caregiver can soothe the child via an integrated two-way intercom. A very cool feature is that up to three additional videocamera units can be added to the system, so caregivers can monitor up to four different rooms — nice options for a growing family, or one that does a lot of running around. — Judi Dash

Golden Gate Bridge turns 75

SAN FRANCISCO — The Golden Gate Bridge is turning 75 on May 27. And what a historic span it’s been. Big, bold, and orange, the bridge is a beloved symbol of San Francisco and one of the most instantly recognizable landmarks in the world. But for all its photogenic qualities, the bridge is uniquely accessible. You can drive across, walk across, bike across, sail beneath it, even scream over it in a daring display of aerial acrobatics. (OK, to do that, you’d have to be in the Navy’s Blue Angels flying squad during Fleet Week.) The public can also celebrate the bridge’s three-quarters of a century by taking part in many events scheduled from now through the fall, including art exhibitions, film screenings, tours, and talks.
