Afghanistan: The Forgotten War
Audio Interview | Lt. Christopher Haynes
Platoon leader. South Carolina.
"There's a lot of traditional warfare going on here. I've got guided missiles on top of my trucks, but still some of the best things we've done here are getting out of the trucks and going into the mountains to where the enemy stores their weapons."
Lt. Christopher Haynes, 24, grew up in a military family so there was never much doubt about what he would do. After attending the University of South Carolina's ROTC program, he was commissioned into the Army two years ago.
Haynes commands an armored humvee platoon that is equipped with a mounted anti-tank missile. His mission is to patrol the Pech Valley road to make sure insurgents are not planting improvised explosive devises (IEDs) in the road.
The 1-32 battalion has suffered some losses in recent months. Haynes says he does not dwell too much on losses. "You keep your head in the game so more soldiers don't go down," he said.
