Colo. man held in fatal shooting

VAIL, Colo. - A 63-year-old man suspected of fatally shooting one person and wounding three others in a Vail bar has been arrested in what authorities say was an apparently random shooting.

Longtime Vail resident Richard Moreau is accused of firing several shots outside and inside the Sandbar Sports Grill in the ski-resort town. He was arrested Saturday on suspicion of first-degree homicide and is to appear in court today.

Police said Gary Bruce Kitching, 70, of Carbondale, Colo., was fatally shot. The names of the other victims were not released.

Vail Police Chief Dwight Henninger said yesterday that the Colorado Bureau of Investigation was helping investigate. He said the town about 100 miles west of Denver hadn't had any homicides since the early 1980s. - AP

3 women slain; Ill. suspect held

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. - Investigators captured a man yesterday who they believe opened fire on a car parked at a gas station Saturday night, killing three women, officials said. Children in the vehicle escaped unharmed.

The women were shot several times, mostly in the torso, outside the Crown Food Mart in East St. Louis. They all died later at a hospital, Illinois State Police Lt. James Morrisey said. At least one victim knew the gunman, he said.

Police in St. Louis arrested the suspect last night at an apartment after an intensive search for the man's white 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis.

The suspect's name was not released because charges had not yet been filed.

Burst pipe led to Utah explosion

WOODS CROSS, Utah - A refinery explosion that severely damaged 10 houses last week was caused by a burst pipe that sprayed hydrogen gas onto a heater, the U.S. Chemical Safety Board's lead investigator said.

Donald Holmstrom said investigators didn't know why the pipe incurred what he called a catastrophic failure. He said the safety board would test what's left of the pipe to determine what went wrong.

The 10-inch pipe was carrying 630 pounds of pressurized hydrogen when it ruptured Wednesday morning. The explosion at the Silver Eagle Refinery smashed windows, bent garage doors, and peeled siding from 10 houses.

No injuries were reported, but Holmstrom said five workers were in the unit just minutes before the blast. - AP

NEW YORK - A 34-year-old man who tried to get out of a stuck elevator in Brooklyn died yesterday after falling five stories down an elevator shaft, officials said.

Police say the man had been trying to jump out of a disabled elevator car when his clothing got caught.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was unconscious and unresponsive when taken to the Bellevue Hospital Center. He was pronounced dead at 3:30 a.m. yesterday, about three hours after the accident in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Police said no criminal activity was suspected.
