Decision near on detainee trials

DOHA, Qatar - U.S. officials are reviewing which Guantanamo Bay detainees could face trial in American courts, and the first indications could come next week, the U.S. attorney general said yesterday.

Eric H. Holder Jr. told reporters that some decisions could be announced as early as next Monday, but he declined to give details or say whether it could include some of the detainees accused in the Sept. 11 attacks.

The Senate last week backed a plan to have the option of prosecuting Sept. 11 terrorists, such as accused mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, either in federal courts or by a military commission.

Japan: Troop deal needs more time

TOKYO - Japan's foreign minister said yesterday that no deal on relocating U.S. troops on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa can be expected during President Obama's visit this week, saying the issue needs more time to resolve.

Obama is scheduled to arrive Friday, and a meeting with Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama is on the agenda. Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada said yesterday that "an agreement between the heads of state holds heavy meaning," but cannot be expected to be completed during Obama's visit.

Student expelled for short dress

SAO PAULO, Brazil - A Brazilian university has expelled a woman who was heckled by hundreds of fellow students for wearing a short, pink dress to class and yesterday publicly accused her of immorality.

The private Bandeirante University in Sao Bernardo do Campo said Geisy Arruda, 20, disrespected "ethical principles, academic dignity and morality."

The university published newspaper ads accusing Arruda of attending class with "inadequate clothing" and having a provocative attitude.

Arruda made headlines after the Oct. 22 incident, in which she was escorted away by police after wearing the mini-dress to class. Brazil's national student union said it was against the expulsion. - AP

Defense Minister Ignazio La Russa's office said paramilitary police arrested Luigi Esposito in Posillipo, a suburb of Naples. Esposito, on the run since 2003, was among 33 people indicted as alleged members of the Camorra clan.
