British Prime Minister David Cameron pledged Friday to send extra fencing and sniffer dogs across the Channel to the French port of Calais as part of escalating attempts to block desperate migrants attempting to cross the undersea tunnel to England.

British Prime Minister David Cameron pledged Friday to send extra fencing and sniffer dogs across the Channel to the French port of Calais as part of escalating attempts to block desperate migrants attempting to cross the undersea tunnel to England.

The tensions in Calais mark the latest pressure point for Europe as it struggles with a growing crush of migrants from Africa, the Middle East, and Asia plying smuggler routes across the Mediterranean or back channels overland.

Thousands of migrants have perished in shipwrecks and sinkings, while others are stuck in limbos such as the bottleneck in Calais, where about 3,000 people have filled a makeshift camp known as "the jungle."
