Case widens in Cleveland killings

CLEVELAND - Authorities are investigating whether a suspected serial killer whose home and yard harbored the remains of at least 11 people is connected to any killings in places he lived while in the military, including Japan, California, and the Carolinas.

The FBI will investigate any leads against Anthony Sowell, 50, who served in the Marines from 1978 to 1985, spokesman Scott Wilson said. The city of East Cleveland is also reviewing three unsolved slayings in 1988 and 1989, after Sowell returned there from service in the Marines.

Sowell has been charged in Cleveland with five counts of aggravated murder. He was indicted yesterday on one count of attempted murder, two counts of rape, two counts of kidnapping, and two counts of felonious assault in an alleged attack Sept. 22 that led to the search of his home. - AP

Maclaren strollers subject of recall

WASHINGTON - About a million Maclaren strollers sold by Target, Babies "R" Us, and other stores were recalled yesterday, after 12 reports of children having their fingertips amputated by a hinge mechanism.

The recall includes the following single and double umbrella stroller models: Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno, and Easy Traveller. They have been sold since 1999. The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall.

The strollers were made in China and distributed by Maclaren USA Inc of South Norwalk, Conn. The company is offering free hinge covers to prevent future incidents. The CPSC said affected consumers should contact Maclaren at 877-688-2326. - AP

Paterson urges gay-marriage law

ALBANY, N.Y. - Gov. David Paterson urged lawmakers yesterday to legalize same-sex marriage in New York, calling it "an issue that touches on the very core of our citizenship."

His request raises the hopes of gay-rights advocates after voters in Maine last week repealed that state's same-sex-marriage law.

In a rare midyear address to a joint session of the Legislature, Paterson, a Democrat, singled out his same-sex-marriage proposal in a lengthy agenda for today's extraordinary session that will mostly be devoted to addressing the state's $3.2 billion deficit.

The marriage measure, already passed in the Democrat-led Assembly, wasn't brought to the state Senate floor last spring because there weren't enough votes in the 32-30 Democratic majority to pass it. - AP

The Senate confirmed U.S. District Judge Andre Davis to join the federal appeals court based in Richmond, Va., tipping the once conservative court in favor of Democratic appointees. Davis is the sixth of President Obama's judicial nominees to be confirmed.
