Sanford's mother is praying for him

BEAUFORT, S.C. - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's mother said yesterday that she was praying for her son as pressure mounted for a criminal probe into his secret trip to visit his lover in Argentina. "I love him and support him," Margaret Sanford, 83, said while sitting on a wooden picnic bench outside her home.

After going missing for days, the married father of four admitted Wednesday to a yearlong affair with a woman who lives in Argentina. In a tearful news conference, the two-term Republican asked for forgiveness and explained that a friendship with the woman had blossomed into romance a year ago, around the time of a state-funded trip to South America.

On Thursday, Sanford agreed to reimburse the state for part of the more-than-$8,000 tab for that economic-development trip. Exactly how much he needs to pay back has not yet been determined, Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer said yesterday.

2 listed as critical after fatal crash

MIAMI, Okla. - Two survivors of an Oklahoma traffic wreck that killed nine people Friday when a tractor-trailer slammed into stopped cars were listed in critical condition yesterday.

Police said they would give prosecutors the results of their investigation to decide whether to bring any charges after the crash that left some victims pinned in the wreckage for up to nine hours. The truck driver, whom police identified as Donald Creed, 76, of Willard, Mo., was hospitalized in good condition.

An earlier crash had stopped eastbound traffic on the Will Rogers Turnpike when the big rig slammed into at least three cars, which then crashed into more vehicles, police said. - AP
