Picks of Coming Video Games
Madden NFL Arcade
(PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)EA Sports (Developer and Publisher)
Download only (1,200 pts on Xbox Live or $14.99 on PSN)
After watching the Eagles for the last two weekends, Philly fans could probably use some virtual football right now. A game that allows one to freeze opponents into a block of ice, or to suddenly have a number of extra lineman appear to help move the ball might could be what Eagles coach Andy Reid needs as well.
Fortunately, EA Sports continues its tradition of less-serious sports games (3-on-3 NHL Arcade being the previous title) for download only.
This isn't really a less sim-Madden game. This five vs. five game should be thought of as a kids' version of NFL Blitz more than anything else.
The aforementioned freezing is just one of many "game changers"; others include Fumblitis (ball carrier will fumble upon contact), Bonus Play (your team actually gets an extra down) and my favorite Triple Threat (quarterback throws three balls at once). Sure, all this probably is blasphemous for Maddenites, but hey, sometimes Maddenites aren't that fun to begin with. They also will probably explode when they hear there are just four plays on offense (one run, three pass) and four plays on defense (blitz, short-, medium-, and long-pass defense).
It's a fun, silly, little game that never takes more than 10 minutes to play. Call it football cartoon where you are in control of all the ACME products.
Karaoke Revolution
(PS3, Xbox 360, Wii)Konami (Publisher, Developer)
$49.99
Tonsil tinkling wannabes among us keep getting reprieves with this franchise and for good reason. This developer always seems to add that "one more thing" in the game to make people keep accumulating the titles.
In this case, it is 50 new songs by the likes of Coldplay, Pink, Rod Stewart, Jason Mraz, The Fray, Lady Gaga, and Pat Benatar. In other words, it seems like any age group can find something they like. Most of these songs include the accompanying music videos. Support for microphones from games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band is included and the ability to not only create your own crooner, but Xbox 360 Live Vision Camera and Sony's Eye Toy can be used to put your face on your singer.
Pretty cool.
Creation doesn't stop there, either, as there also will be configurable venues with fireworks and other stage props. You know, just in case your Britney Spears routine just ain't cutting it.
Konami has already announced that a couple of hundred additional songs and items will be available as online content.
