Pa. Boys: Penncrest tips Chester for 7th spot

Penncrest has had some pretty good teams and players over the years, but has never been able to beat Delaware County rival Chester in boys' basketball.

Until now.

The Lions (24-5) edged the Clippers (16-10), 56-53, in a District 1 Class AAAA seventh-place game at West Chester East yesterday, getting 31 points from Rodney Duncan.

Duncan was particularly effective from the free-throw line, hitting all 14 of his chances. He made 10 in the fourth quarter and four in the final minute. Duncan also made five three-point attempts.

In a ninth-place game at Plymouth Whitemarsh, Arron Goodman, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, had eight points and 19 rebounds for Council Rock North in its 39-33 win over Upper Dublin, ending the season for the Cardinals.

The game was tied with 2 minutes, 30 seconds left, but some key offensive rebounds helped the Indians pull the game out.

In a third-place game at Norristown, West Chester Rustin made eight of 12 fourth-quarter free throws in a 49-46 win over Souderton.

District 1 Class AAA. In a third-place game at Coatesville, Pottsgrove outlasted Octorara, 57-42.

District 1 Class A. In the title game at Villanova University, second-seeded Girard College got 33 points from John Johnson to beat top-seeded Church Farm, 68-56, for its fourth straight district title.

District 12 Class AA. At Northeast, Imhotep Charter beat West Catholic, 51-42, for its second straight district title.

Erik Copes, a 6-foot-8 center, picked up the scoring slack for the Panthers with 12 points with five rebounds and five blocked shots.

Imhotep Charter guards David Appolon and Ameen Tanksley were held to a combined total of nine points, mostly because of foul trouble.

Aquil Younger carried West Catholic with 22 points.

NCSAA National Tournament. In Erie, Keith Gleaton had 18 points and 13 rebounds for International Christian as it finished the season with a 77-54 win over Imani Christian for the title in its division.
