Unionville shocks Pennsbury in playoff opener, 12-7
The 15th-seeded Indians (8-3) used a 32-yard pass from Connor Gades to Connor O'Malley to cut the lead to 7-6 in the first quarter and then the only other score of the game came on a 9-yard run by Massom Poppham in the third.
Things were looking good for the second-seeded Falcons (9-2) early in the first quarter when Brandon Pepper went on a 98-yard scoring run, but Unionville's defense tightened up after that.
Poppham tracked down Pepper after a 60-yard run in the fourth quarter to stop one potential touchdown. Later in the same drive, Unionville stopped the Falcons on four straight running plays, the final one a tackle by linebacker Ronnie Birmingham at his own 6 with 1 minute, 40 seconds left.
Unionville advances to a second-round date against Ridley.
Penncrest 38, Garnet Valley 35 - The 14th-seeded Lions got a 25-yard touchdown run on an option keeper from quarterback Matt Atkinson with 3:40 left in the final quarter and stunned the host Jaguars, seeded third.
Jerry Boyer scored on a pair of 1-yard bolts and Phil Barbieri caught a 19-yard scoring toss from Atkinson to give Penncrest (8-3) a 21-7 lead in the second quarter, but Garnet Valley (9-2) rallied behind Marcelus Irving and Mark McHugh, who notched a pair of touchdowns each to give their team a 28-21 lead in the third quarter.
After an exchange of touchdowns by John Young for the Lions and Irving in the third quarter, Tom Weathers kicked a 31-yard field goal and Atkinson performed his heroics to give the Penncest the win.
The Lions lost to the Jaguars during the regular season, 28-27, on Sept. 25.
Penncrest will visit Downingtown East for a second-round game next weekend.
Ridley 40, Council Rock South 15 - The host Green Raiders (10-1), the No. 7 seed, got 205 passing yards from quarterback Colin Masterson, including touchdown strikes of 60 and 66 yards.
Council Rock South (8-3), the No. 10 seed, tied the game early by scoring on a blocked punt but the Green Raiders put it away with 13 unanswered third-quarter points.
Senior defensive end Casey DePrinzio had 12 tackles, three for losses, to pace the Ridley defense.
District 1 Class AAA
It was the Ryan Brumfield show once again for host Owen J. Roberts in a 34-7 first-round win over Marple Newtown.After the No. 3-seed Wildcats (10-1) spotted the No. 6 Tigers (7-4) a 7-0 lead, Brumfield took over, scoring on runs of 3, 3, 77, 17 and 2 yards and finished with 251 yards on 17 carries.
Owen J. Roberts will play either Interboro or Academy Park in a second-round game next weekend.
Pottsgrove 21, Upper Moreland 14 - The top-seeded Falcons (11-0) needed to rally from a 14-7 deficit as Maika Polamalu scored on a 6-yard run with 40 seconds left to break a 14-14 tie.
Pottsgrove advances to the second round against either West Chester Rustin or Upper Perkiomen.
Nonleague
Ernesto Garcia touched the ball just eight times, but accounted for three touchdowns to allow Lincoln coach Gene Kelly to ride off into retirement with a 41-8 win over visiting Fels.Garcia, who rushed for 50 yards, scored on runs of 3 and 12 yards in the first quarter when Lincoln (7-4) was taking a 27-0 lead, then added a 15-yard scoring run in the second quarter.
