Carroll girls' lacrosse takes ninth straight title
Receiving six goals from sophomore sensation Hannah Schmitt and five from junior Aimee Gennaro, the Patriots doubled up Archbishop Wood, 16-8, at Swarthmore College to claim their ninth consecutive Catholic League crown.
"I'm so happy for this team," Carroll senior co-captain Kaitlin Harris said. "It was a lot of hard work that got us here."
Last night's final also decided the District 12 champion. With lacrosse a PIAA-sanctioned sport for the first time, the Patriots, securing the district's only berth, will begin play in the opening round of the state tournament on Tuesday against West Chester Rustin, District 1's seventh-place qualifier, at a site and time to be determined.
On April 25, Carroll bowed to Rustin, 13-8, in the Katie Samson Tournament. "We're excited to get the chance to play them again," said coach Lorraine Beers, who has guided the Patriots to 120 consecutive Catholic League victories.
Carroll (14-5) beat the Vikings (17-3) in the league final for the fifth consecutive year. In the teams' regular-season meeting, the Patriots eked out a 9-8 win.
