Kennett names new football coach
Great Valley, which has a football coaching vacancy because Gary Phillips' contract was not renewed, expects to name his replacement next week. According to athletic director Russ Wren, there are three finalists for the position.
At Kennett, the 36-year old Green inherits a team that was 4-7 last season. The Blue Demons play in the American Division of the Ches-Mont League. Because of what the snow has done to school schedules, Green has not had a chance to meet his prospective players yet.
"We were supposed to meet this week," said Green, a paraprofessional in the Garnet Valley School District who has gone back to school to get his teaching certification. Kennett athletic director Jeff Thomas said Green was hired solely as football coach.
A graduate of now-closed St. James, Green got his first coaching position at Boyertown as an assistant to Ray Giunta, now the coach at Marple Newtown. After three years at Boyertown, Green went to St. John Neumann (now Neumann-Goretti) for a year. He's also served on the staffs at Chichester and Marple Newtown.
"Kennett is getting a great coach and a great guy," said Ricci, who took the Jaguars to the Central League championship two years ago, their first season in the league. They went all the way to the PIAA Class AAA final before losing to Thomas Jefferson.
"Scott's passionate about coaching and the kids," Ricci added. "I'm thrilled for Scott and Rich Boyd, who will step into Scott's shoes. But I'm sorry for us."
Green, who directed a triple-option offense at Garnet Valley, said his style of play at Kennett will be dictated by the personnel.
"It's not one offense or one defense that wins a state championship," said Green, a resident of the Garnet Valley district. "It depends on coaching and fundamentals. I have high expectations."
