South Jersey high school football questions and answers

It doesn't get any better from a high school football perspective. First, there are this week's Thanksgiving games. Then come the South Jersey public school championship games the following week.

With all that action on the horizon, here are some questions and answers as the season nears what is expected to be an eventful ending.

Question: What was the biggest shocker of this past weekend?

Answer: It's close between two Colonial Conference teams, Paulsboro and Haddonfield. The definition of a shocker is when you pick up the paper (or check the Internet) and see all the scores and say, "Wow."

The fact that Paulsboro beat Glassboro is no surprise. The Red Raiders have won 16 sectional titles, the most of any public school in South Jersey since the advent of playoffs in 1974. However, to beat Glassboro, 35-0, was a stunner. This game was over at halftime when the Red Raiders led, 28-0. Nobody, even at Paulsboro, could have seen that coming.

Yet was that any more surprising than Haddonfield beating West Deptford, 15-13? Haddonfield lost to West Deptford, 35-13, in the regular season and by 43-0 last year. West Deptford was averaging nearly 50 points per game. To demonstrate how potent West Deptford's offense had been, the 35 points the Eagles scored against Haddonfield represented their lowest regular season total. It was a great defensive effort by Haddonfield, which bottled up West Deptford's running attack. Jimmy Owens, who was averaging almost a first down per carry, was limited to 90 yards in 27 carries by the Bulldogs. So for shocker of the weekend, we'll go with Haddonfield by the slightest of margins.

Q: What is the best Thanksgiving game story line?

A: That's easy. Cherokee has just moved to the No. 1 spot in The Inquirer's South Jersey top 10. The Chiefs now must visit Seneca on Thanksgiving. It's a Seneca team coming off a heartbreaking 3-0 overtime defeat to top-seeded Hammonton in the South Jersey Group 3 playoffs. Cherokee fans can talk all they want about the No. 1 spot, but they won't keep it if the Chiefs don't beat Seneca.

This is a talented Seneca team that has nothing to lose and can pull out all the stops. So, if Cherokee happens to be looking ahead to the South Jersey Group 4 championship game against visiting Egg Harbor Township, the Chiefs could encounter plenty of problems from Seneca.

Q: Has Williamstown's loss to Cherokee taken some of the luster off Friday's Tri-County Royal Division showdown with Delsea?

A: Maybe for the fans, but not for the teams. The Royal Division title is at stake. Williamstown has won the previous two Royal titles, and Delsea would like nothing better than to stop that streak. The Braves, meanwhile, face the prospect of having a great season and nothing to show for it, at least title-wise, with a loss to Delsea. The fact that the teams are no longer ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in South Jersey has taken some of the luster away - just not to the players or coaches. This is the Super Bowl for both teams.

Q: When talking about Timber Creek, is it all right to focus on the defense?

A: It sure is. After falling to Burlington Township, 38-30, Timber Creek has been a defensive force in the first two rounds of the Group 3 playoffs. The Chargers opened with a 12-0 win over Moorestown and then beat a dangerous Lacey Township team, 13-2. According to our math, that is zero points allowed by the defense. One of their victims was a Moorestown team that put 42 on the board against Holy Cross in their season finale, the week after losing to Timber Creek. Defensive lineman Matt Huckabee is among the players leading the Chargers' defense.

In the Group 3 final, Timber Creek will meet a Hammonton team that has yet to allow a point in two playoff games, beating Winslow Township, 30-0, and Seneca by 3-0 in OT. So, the winner of the Group 3 final, which will take place Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at Hammonton, might be the first team to score.

Q: What can you say about St. Joseph winning another state title?

A: It's remarkable! According to South Jersey historian Chuck Langerman, St. Joseph leads the state with 19 state titles, including championships in 1977 and 1990 that were uncontested. St. Joseph and Paulsboro lead South Jersey with 29 playoff appearances. And here's some not so comforting news for Cape Atlantic League rivals: St. Joseph, which went 8-2, may be better next year.

Q: Are there any statistical milestones to look for this week?

A: According to Langerman, St. Augustine's Dustin Thomas is approaching one South Jersey record and a state milestone when he closes his career Wednesday at Buena. Thomas has 5,772 career passing yards, 157 away from breaking the South Jersey career record of 5,928 set by Kevin Foley of Cherry Hill East in 1991. He is 228 yards away from being only the sixth quarterback in the state to break the 6,000-yard mark.

Here are the top seven career passing yardage leaders in the state (and their final seasons), courtesy of Langerman:

1. Scott Brown, Butler Township, 8,732 yards, 1997; 2. Chris Simms, Ramapo, 7,055, 1998; 3. Vito Campanile, Paramus Catholic, 6,755, 1992.

4. Colin Gaynor, Toms River East, 6,619, 2000; 5. Matt Simms, Don Bosco Prep, 6,090, 2006; 6. Kevin Foley, Cherry Hill East, 5,928, 1991.

7. Dustin Thomas, St. Augustine, 5,772, 2009.
