Octorara captures Class AA soccer crown
He will call out their names before he throws the ball in, just so they know where it's going, Weathers said.
"I got each one," Weathers said with a smile.
Within less than two minutes, Weathers had hit both Patrick and Topper with perfect passes. And both scored to give Octorara's soccer team its first state championship since 1999 with a 2-1 victory over Hampton in the PIAA Class AA title game yesterday.
Octorara scored in the 26th and 28th minutes to take a commanding two-goal lead into halftime at Hersheypark Stadium. The Braves' defense did just enough to hang on - mostly thanks to keeper Josh Wolff, who made five key saves even with an injured right thumb. He hurt the thumb in Tuesday's semifinal win over Fleetwood.
"For the program, you can't say much more," Octorara coach Kevin Noon said. "It's great. All I'm thinking about is the boys. This is a great group of kids. They deserve it."
Evan Wilson scored for Hampton in the 68th minute.
The Braves might not have won if not for Wolff's save on a penalty kick late in the first half. In the 37th minute, Wolff guessed correctly and dived left to stop a low attempt by Zachary Carter.
"Just him being out there and making saves was something in question after Tuesday night's game," Noon said.
With Weathers' passing, Octorara had all the scoring it needed. Weathers said Patrick would normally stay at the near post and knock in Weathers' throws. That's exactly what happened in the 26th minute.
Then, Weathers looked for Topper, who normally stands at the edge of the penalty area. He was there, just as Weathers knew he would be. Topper headed the ball in.
"Usually, when I call out their name," Weathers said, "they get ready because I put it right on their head."
Octorara 2 0 - 2
Hampton 0 1 - 1
