Downingtown West reaches girls' soccer title game

Downingtown West hammered State College, 5-0, in a PIAA State Class AAA girls' soccer semifinal yesterday at HersheyPark Stadium.

In doing so, the Whippets (22-1-1) got some vengeance on the Lions on behalf of another team in the same school district. State College (18-2) eliminated Downingtown East, 2-0, in a quarterfinal last week.

Interestingly enough, the Cougars completed a curious circle of comparative scores by handing Downingtown West its only loss of the season in the District 1 semifinals, 2-1, in overtime.

Downingtown East will face either Norwin or Erie McDowell in Saturday's title game.

Boys' Soccer

In a PIAA State Class A semifinal at Exeter, Christopher Dock overwhelmed Camp Hill, 3-0.

Last year, Camp Hill eliminated Christopher Dock, 1-0, in the same state semifinal.

The Pioneers (19-3-1) advanced to the state championship game Saturday.

Brandon Reichart scored the first two goals of the game, one in each half. Reichart's first goal came as a result of a pass from Caleb McMain just 1 minute, 51 seconds into the game.

His second goal came 44 minutes later to make it 2-0. Chad Clemens also scored on a penalty kick and David Brelsford had five saves for the shutout.

Camp Hill finished the season 17-7-1.

PIAA State Class AA. Greg Patrick scored in overtime to give District 1 champion Octorara a 2-1 win over District 3 champion Fleetwood at HersheyPark Stadium. It was Patrick's 30th goal of the year and propelled the Braves (16-4-1) into Saturday's 2 p.m. final against Hampton. Fleetwood, a two-time defending state champion, finished 26-2.

Field Hockey

District 11 power Lehighton showed just why it is so highly regarded, handing Villa Maria its second loss of the season, 3-0, in a PIAA State Class AA semifinal at Emmaus.

The Indians (23-0) got goals from Abby Frey, Corrine McConville, and Vanessa Rimbey. The Hurricanes finished their season 22-2.

"We didn't capitialize on our opportunities," Villa Maria coach Maureen Polley said. "We had 15 shots on goal and 13 corners and we couldn't convert one of them. Their goalkeeper [Sara Snyder] was absolutely the difference in the game."

Snyder had 13 saves.

Football

In a nonleague game, host Edison beat Boys' Latin, 18-14, to post its first win of the season.

The Owls (1-9) looked like they weren't going to get that chance until late in the fourth quarter when the game turned on James Long's 32-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown to overcome a 14-12 Boys' Latin lead.

After the score and a failed two-point conversion, Edison had an 18-12 lead. The Warriors then drove to the Owls' 18, where the game ended.
