Holy Cross advances to final

Holy Cross is maturing as a playoff team at just the right time, showing patience while ousting visiting Sacred Heart, 2-1, in the semifinals of the NJSIAA South Jersey Non-Public B girls' soccer tournament.

Lancers freshman Clare MacAdams and Sacred Heart's Leah Brady traded goals five minutes apart midway through the second half, setting the stage for Clare's senior sister, Mary Catherine, to deposit the winning goal with 5:41 to play.

Mary Catherine MacAdams scored on a 35-yard free kick to put Holy Cross in its second title game in three years.

"We played well," Holy Cross coach Sergio Torres said. "We stuck to our game plan and we didn't get frustrated. We had trouble with that earlier in the season."

Gloucester Catholic also advanced with a 2-1 win, clipping visiting St. Rose of Belmar with a pair of goals by Chelsea Duffy.

Duffy, who converted a pass from Karen Thomas for the first goal, scored 10 minutes apart in the second half, putting the Rams ahead, 2-0, with 15 minutes left. Gloucester Catholic goalie Jacki Wajda made five saves.

South Jersey Non-Public A. It took just 15 seconds for Paul VI to grab a lead it never relinquished en route to a 2-0 win over visiting Notre Dame in the sectional semifinals.

Junior forward Chelsea Phillips scored both goals, including the first on a pass from Loern Reilly.

The insurance goal came 25 minutes later off a crossing pass from Jenna Pedrick. Eagles goalie Sarah Hinkle notched eight saves for her sixth consecutive shutout.

South Jersey Group 4. Lenape scored two goals in each half and sailed into the sectional finals with a 4-1 semifinal win over visiting Clearview.

Devon Betsch, Emmy Duffey, Courtney Kovac, and Tori Prager scored the goals, while goalie Allison Johnson made eight saves, allowing only a late score by the Pioneers' Morgan Brasch.

Visiting Eastern, seeded sixth, avenged an earlier 3-2 loss to Shawnee by beating the No. 2 seed Renegades, 2-1, in the other semifinal.

South Jersey Group 3. With 2 minutes, 11 seconds left in a scoreless semifinal battle, Highland's Melissa Blevins stole the ball from a defender and sent a game-winning shot into the right corner of the net for a 1-0 win over visiting Brick Memorial.

Blevins' eighth goal of the season beat Brick goalie Lauren McElroy (10 saves). Highland goalie Leighanna Milby made 17 saves for her eighth shutout.

Bridget Bianco scored her first goal of the season for Moorestown but it was not enough to prevent a 3-2 overtime loss in overtime at Point Pleasant Boro.

Moorestown's Steph Toy tied the game at 2-2 with 12 minutes left in regulation.

South Jersey Group 1. Pennsville goalie Jill Clark turned aside all seven shots she faced for her 12th shutout and anchored the Eagles' 2-0 shutout of visiting Schalick in the sectional semifinals.

Senior Sarah Nickle assisted Alex Smith on the game's first goal one minute into the second half, and Nickle scored an insurance goal from her freshman sister, Abigail, later in the half.

Clayton will be Pennsville's opponent in the title matchup after the Clippers subdued visiting Maple Shade, 5-0, with the 50th career shutout by goalie Valarie Perretti.

Perretti made eight saves, and Clayton's balanced attack produced single goals by Mandy Hall, Devon Horner, Randi Lewis, Maxie New (two assists) and Felicia Riccelli.
