W.C. Henderson, North Penn harriers set pace

The West Chester Henderson and North Penn boys made it a clean sweep for District 1 Class AAA team and individual honors yesterday at the PIAA state cross-country championships at the Parkview Course in Hershey.

The Warriors, with 119 points, held off a strong challenge from North Allegheny, which had 128, to win the team title, while North Penn's Brad Miles coasted to the best time of the day, 15 minutes, 47 seconds, finishing two seconds ahead of Rad Gunzenhauser of Mount Lebanon. Ryan Gil of North Allegheny was third in 16:03.

Henderson's top finisher was Will Kellar, whose 16:18 was good for sixth.

La Salle, of District 12, finished third with 137 points. The Explorers' top runner was Shawn Quinn, who finished 22d in 16:53.

Other strong performers from the area included Council Rock North's Chris Campbell, who was seventh in 16:21; Father Judge's Tom Kehl, 11th in 16:26; Hatboro-Horsham's Sam Gibbs, 12th, also in 16:26; and Central Bucks West's Nick Scarpello, 15th in 16:28.

Class AA Boys

Lower Moreland was 14th, District 1's best team finish, while Phil-Mont Christian's Jon Shope was the district's top individual finisher, placing fifth in 16:54. Kutztown's Steven Welsh had the best time in that class, 16:37.

Masterman of District 12th was 15th overall, led by Jack Denison's 46th-place finish.

Class AAA girls

Freshman Sarah Sargent won the gold medal in 18:35, leading Pennsbury to a third-place team finish, behind only Emmaus - the champion - and North Penn.

The Maidens were led by Meghan McGovern, who finished eighth overall in 19:10.

Central Bucks East's Katie Kinkead was second overall in 18:44.

Janie Augustyn of West Chester Henderson finished fourth in 18:58.

Class AA girls

St. Basil gained a fifth-place team finish behind Megan McGarrity's 20:35, which placed her 28th overall. The Panthers had 220 team points.

The only teams finishing ahead of the Panthers were Central Cambria with 99, Union City with 153, Northwest Lehigh with 154, and Lewisburg with 179.
