Gloucester Catholic, Delsea, Paulsboro score wins

Tim Segich made key contributions on offense, defense, and special teams, and junior quarterback Cody Brown threw for 136 yards and two scores to lead host Gloucester Catholic to an 18-6 win over Cumberland yesterday in Tri-County Conference Royal Division football.

The Rams improved to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the division.

Segich had six receptions for 84 yards - including a 20-yard touchdown catch from Brown - and he raced 60 yards with an interception to set up another score. The senior also booted a pair of punts that traveled 87 and 69 yards with no return by the Colts (1-6, 1-5).

Delsea 54, Deptford 7 - Austin Medley scored four consecutive touchdowns to stake the second-ranked Crusaders (7-0, 4-0) to a 35-point first- half lead in the Royal Division mismatch at Deptford (0-7, 0-6).

Medley, a senior running back, ran for three scores and hauled in a 54-yard pass from Chris Jackson for an additional TD.

Jackson got Delsea rolling with a 47-yard scoring scamper in the opening quarter.

Paulsboro had scored 22 touchdowns in six games this season, including three touchdown passes by Kevin Johnson, but there was a glaring hole in that high-powered offense before yesterday.

The Red Raiders (6-1) did not have a touchdown reception by a wide receiver until senior Sean McClain took care of that stat with three trips to the end zone on the end of passes from Johnson en route to a 40-6 victory over visiting Sterling (0-6).

McClain, a 6-foot-1, 180-pounder, caught scoring passes of 30, 26 and 33 yards in a 27-point first quarter, and added a 33-yard interception return for a TD from his strong safety position.

"We wanted to throw the ball quite a bit against their defense," Paulsboro coach Glenn Howard said. "Sean made a lot of big plays in the open field to get to the end zone after he caught the ball."

Terrance Downs started the second half by returning the kickoff 78 yards for another Red Raiders score.

Overbrook 30, Gateway 8 - Mike Sloan ran for 191 yards and two touchdowns - including a 78-yard jaunt - and scooped up a fumble and raced 86 yards for a third score, as the host Rams ran away with the interdivision game.

Overbrook (3-4) opened the scoring in the second quarter on Devon Dredden returned a fumble 75 yards, but Gateway (0-6) answered with Nick Rutter's 8-yard TD toss to Joe Sesko.

Woodbury 35, Collingswood 0 - The Thundering Herd (5-1) received touchdowns from five players in routing visiting Collingswood (1-6).

Eric Blackwell dashed 53 yards to open the scoring, and Terrence Tolbert's 37-yard burst put the finishing touches on the romp.

Burlco/Olympic

Dylan Martin found Bryant Watts open with a 27-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, and Marcus Rawls reached the end zone from 3 yards out in the third, providing all the offense Florence (4-2, 3-1) needed to defeat host Bordentown, 14-0, in a Freedom Division game.

The Scotties (1-5, 1-3) failed to score for just the second time this season.

Nonleague

T.J. Boyd scored twice in the second half - on a 23-yard run and a 54-yard pass from Rick Costales - as host Delran (2-4) snapped a four-game losing streak by rallying past Maple Shade, 16-7.

The Wildcats (3-4) grabbed an early lead on Pedro Aldebol's 57-yard bomb to Miles Drummond.
