Haddonfield girls aim for state tennis title
"We know this team is capable of a lot," Ng said. "But we have to take our time and take it one match at time."
The future is now for Ng and the rest of the Bulldogs.
Haddonfield, the undefeated No. 1 team in The Inquirer Super Six, will take aim at its 16th state title today during Group 2 play at Mercer County Park.
Moorestown will compete in Group 3, and Atlantic City will compete in Group 4 in other action at the tennis center.
Moorestown (20-2) will face Central Jersey champion Holmdel (17-2) in the Group 3 semifinals at 9 a.m.
"We lost to Holmdel, 4-1, in the Moorestown Classic," Moorestown coach Bill Kingston said, referring to the Sept. 12-13 tournament. "This match will be a good test of our progress."
Moorestown is led by the No. 1 doubles team of senior Chrissy Chamberlain and junior Ally Curtis, who have a 23-2 record. Sophomore Emma Allen is 18-8 at No. 1 singles and senior Lexi Gertie is 15-5 at No. 2 singles.
"I hope we can play our best and let the results speak for themselves," Kingston said.
Atlantic City (13-1) will face West Windsor-South (13-0), the No. 1 team in the Newark Star Ledger state rankings, in the Group 4 semifinals at 9 a.m.
Atlantic City is led by senior Bushra Memon at No. 1 singles and senior Chloe Trave at No. 2 singles.
Haddonfield played a highly competitive schedule this season. The Bulldogs scored victories over Moorestown, Holmdel, Cherry Hill East, Holy Spirit, Montgomery, and Lawrenceville Prep.
"This season's success against some of the state's best tennis programs has given our players confidence in their ability to meet the challenges that the state tournament will present," Haddonfield coach Jeff Holman said.
Haddonfield (28-0) will face Central Jersey champion Gov. Livingston (16-3) in the Group 2 semifinals at 11 a.m. With a victory, the Bulldogs would advance to face the Pascack Hills-Chatham winner in the 3 p.m. state finals.
"We know Haddonfield is an outstanding team and should be considered the favorite," Gov. Livingston coach Bill Meakem said. "We look forward to the opportunity to challenge them."
Haddonfield is led by freshman No. 1 singles Taylor Ng, Spencer Ng's sister, as well as the No. 1 doubles team of junior Martha Theodoris and sophomore Catherine Senopoulos.
Taylor Ng has a 33-2 record. The team of Theodoris/Senopoulos has a 35-1 record, with its only loss to West Windsor-South in the championship match of the state doubles tournament.
Junior No. 2 singles Meghan Burns has a 28-3 record and No. 3 singles Spencer Ng is 29-3. The No. 2 doubles team of junior Taylor Noll and sophomore Rebecca Senopoulos has a 28-2 record.
