Moorestown tops Cumberland in tennis

Last season, the Moorestown girls' tennis team won its 20th consecutive sectional title without a senior in the lineup.

But when the Quakers took the indoor courts in yesterday's Group 3 sectional championship match at Arrowhead Tennis Club in Medford, three of the top four players from last season were not in the building.

Junior Paulina Malts, who could have been South Jersey's top singles player this season, moved to Florida before the school year. Senior Alex Ryan was unable to play this season because of a health issue. And senior Lexi Gertie, the team's regular No. 2 singles player, was out with an illness.

Moorestown still found a way to win its 21st consecutive South Jersey title as No. 1 singles Emma Allen and the No. 1 doubles team of Chrissy Chamberlain and Ally Curtis sparked the Quakers to a 4-1 victory over Cumberland.

"It's a tribute to the other girls for stepping up when they got the opportunity," Moorestown coach Bill Kingston said. "It does say something about the depth of the program."

Moorestown (19-2), No. 2 in The Inquirer Super Six, advances to Wednesday morning's state semifinals at Mercer County Park.

Cumberland (13-3) was in the sectional final for the first time since 2004 and for the third time in school history.

"We knew it was going to be tough, because Moorestown is such a great team," Cumberland coach Connie Cossaboom said. "They've been doing it for a long time. But I'm proud of our girls for battling as hard as they did."

Chamberlain, a senior, and Curtis, a junior, gave the Quakers a quick lift with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. The Moorestown duo improved to 23-1.

"It's always a big deal to win a South Jersey title," Chamberlain said. "It's a different team every year, and we're always excited to get this far."

Allen, a sophomore, scored a 6-1, 6-1 victory. The Quakers also got straight-set wins from No. 3 singles Lauren Culbertson, as well as the No. 2 doubles team of Dana Sleeper and Kelsey Ham.

"It's always important to win a sectional championship," Kingston said. "I thought Cumberland played hard and did a nice job. Our girls played well and were able to come through."

Singles: Emma Allen, M, def. Gabriella Contino, 6-1, 6-1; Mary Kate Maloney, C, def. Danielle McMonagle, 6-4, 6-3; Lauren Culbertson, M, def. Amanda McCormick, 6-1, 6-2.

Doubles: Chrissy Chamberlain and Ally Curtis, M, def. Shayna Perella and Kelsey Buyzick, 6-0, 6-1; Dana Sleeper and Kelsey Ham, M. def. Amanda Irvine and Shannon Maloney, 6-2, 6-2.

South Jersey Group 2. Youth continued to serve Haddonfield well, as freshman Taylor Ng won in straight sets at first singles - setting the tone for the top-seeded Bulldogs' 5-0 victory over No. 2 seed Haddon Township in the sectional final at Cherry Hill Racquet Club.

Juniors Meghan Burns and Spencer Ng completed the singles sweep for Haddonfield, which improved to 27-0. The defending state champions also received strong performances from the underclassmen doubles tandems of Martha Theodoris/Catherine Senopoulos and Rebecca Senopoulos/Taylor Noll.

Singles: Taylor Ng, H, def. Jackie LaBrosse, 6-0, 6-0; Meghan Burns, H, def. Devon Sanford, 6-1, 6-0; Spencer Ng, H, def. Lexi Turcich, 6-0, 6-1.

Doubles: Martha Theodoris and Catherine Senopoulos, H, def. Scout Bauer and Annie Petela, 6-2, 6-0; Rebecca Senopoulos and Taylor Noll, H, def. Jess Donaldson and Alexa Lindsay, 6-1, 6-2.

South Jersey Group 4. Seniors Bushra Memon and Chloe Trave supplied the veteran leadership necessary for No. 3 seed Atlantic City to topple top-seeded Millville, 3-2, for the title at Golf and Tennis World in Pleasantville.

Memon, Trave, and junior Zoe Ganoudis swept the singles competition to ensure the first Group 4 crown for the Vikings (13-1).

Singles: Bushra Memon, AC, def. Courtney Gifford, 6-2, 6-0; Chloe Trave, AC, def. Sarah Lippincott, 6-4, 6-2; Zoe Ganoudis, AC, def. Amanda Hickman, 6-0, 6-0.

Postponements. Yesterday's rain forced three South Jersey sectional title matches to be rescheduled.

Pitman's Group 1 showdown with Point Pleasant Beach is set for 2 p.m. today at Eastern.

Moorestown Friends and Ranney School will meet for the Non-Public B championship today, 2 p.m., at West Windsor-Plainsboro South.

The Non-Public A final between Holy Spirit and Red Bank Catholic has been pushed back to 3 p.m. on Oct. 19 at Monsignor Donovan in Toms River.
