Marc Narducci: S.J. soccer coaches' tourney is loaded
The boys' poll has 15 voters and the girls' poll has 12.
(This reporter has a vote in both polls, and the rest of the voters are coaches).
The field is selected based on the final top 20 Coaches Poll, which consisted of games played through Saturday. The first round begins this week, and the tournament must end by the end of the month.
There was little argument with the girls' selections. Two teams, Haddonfield and Haddon Township, would have earned a berth, but both declined to enter the tournament.
The girls' voters gave Cherokee a No. 9 seed despite the Chiefs' 3-5-1 record. The voters no doubt saw that Cherokee beat No. 4 seed Washington Township, tied No. 7 seed Shawnee, and suffered all of its losses to teams seeded higher.
On the boys' side, however, some teams have good arguments, starting with a few from the toughest conference in South Jersey, the Burlington Liberty.
Two boys' teams, Delran and Haddonfield, opted not to accept a bid. Delran was ranked No. 4 by the coaches and Haddonfield was 10th.
Besides second-seeded Rancocas Valley and Delran, the Liberty is loaded with top boys' squads, and three of them - Moorestown, Cinnaminson and Bordentown - could have an argument for inclusion.
Moorestown has beaten Cinnaminson twice and split with Bordentown, as well as beaten another solid Liberty team, Burlington Township, once.
Cinnaminson defeated Delran, 3-0, a truly impressive win. Other than Rancocas Valley, Cinnaminson is the only other team to beat Delran. Quality wins like that carry a huge weight on this reporter's ballot.
Bordentown beat Cinnaminson, split with Moorestown, tied Rancocas Valley, and lost just by 1-0 to Delran.
For those suggesting that maybe the Liberty is down this year, go to a few games. This remains the most competitive division, but teams got hurt by the voters for beating each other up.
Two other teams that could have made an argument come from the Olympic Conference, Bishop Eustace and Cherry Hill East.
Eustace owns wins over No. 5 seed Lenape, a dangerous team in this tournament. The Crusaders have also beaten Moorestown and Cherry Hill East. Yes, Eustace has lost twice to Seneca, which is a solid team. But the Crusaders own some impressive victories.
East has won and tied against a solid Washington Township team and recently beat Shawnee, which earned the No. 14 seed.
Despite any differences of opinion - and really that is all it happens to be - the best aspect of the Coaches Tournament is that getting in is not easy.
It should be hard to get in, and the debates about the final spots show how many quality teams there are.
Even the girls' tournament has great depth. For example, the No. 16 seed is Cherry Hill West, which has the difficult task of facing No. 1 Paul VI.
On Sept. 30, Paul VI escaped with a 2-1 overtime win over West. So even though Paul VI and Lenape are expected to meet in the girls' final, there will be no free passes.
