Aces stun Fords, 24-21, in overtime

Lower Merion trailed host Haverford High by 14 points with less than three minutes left in a Central League game last night. No problem.

The Aces scored twice to take the game to overtime, then kicked a field goal to stun the Fords, 24-21.

With his team trailing by 21-7, Jon Whiteman caught a 74-yard touchdown pass from Conor Foote. Lower Merion (2-4 league, 2-3 overall) recovered an onside kick and capitalized when Foote hit Nile Thompson with a 24-yard scoring pass with 42 seconds left in regulation.

In overtime, the Aces stopped Haverford (1-5, 0-5) on downs, then Danny Moyer kicked a 17-yard field goal to win the game.

Marple Newtown 14, Strath Haven 7 - Ryan White set the tone by taking the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown against the visiting Panthers (4-2, 3-2).

The Tigers (5-1, 4-1) upped their lead to 14-0 in the third quarter when Ryan Duffy went over from the 1.

Public League Class AAAA White

Central scored early and often in the first quarter and routed host Edison, 40-0.

The Lancers (4-1, 2-1) scored 27 points in the opening quarter on the strength of a 2-yard bolt by Zahim Tahiraj, a 15-yard run by Ravone Cornish, a 13-yard scamper by DeVonne Boler, and a fumble recovered in the end zone. The Owls fell to 0-6, 0-3.

Public League Class AAAA Blue

Robert Andrews raced 91 yards for a touchdown and finished with 156 yards on the ground to help West Philadelphia beat Fels, 22-0, at Charlie Martin Memorial Stadium.

Duane Coppage started the scoring with a 78-yard sprint in the first quarter and Aaron Young caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Charles Walton in the second quarter, giving the Speedboys (3-2, 1-2) a 14-0 halftime lead over the Panthers (1-5, 1-1).

Andrews' score came in the final quarter.

Southern 22, Martin Luther King 7 - Sean Allen and Izeem Sims rushed for touchdowns and led the Rams (2-3, 2-0) past the Golden Cougars (2-4, 2-1) at Benjamin L. Johnston Memorial Stadium.

Lamar Williams led Southern on defense with three interceptions while Joe Montouth rushed for 108 yards for King.

Public League Class AAA

Terrance Stafford rushed for two touchdowns and forced a fumble to lead Dobbins past visiting Gratz, 27-16, at 29th Street Field.

Stafford rushed for 96 yards on 12 carries and was joined in the scoring column by Brandon Briggs who recovered a Stafford fumble in the end zone for a touchdown, and Jamil Williams who caught a scoring pass for the Mustangs (4-2, 2-0).

Aaron Rice and Montrell Stewart scored rushing touchdowns for the Bulldogs (3-3, 1-1) who lost four fumbles in the fourth quarter.

Roxborough 14, William Penn 8 (2OTs) - Adrian Johnson-Pope's interception in the second overtime set up Antonio's Murrell's game-ending 1-yard touchdown run to lift the host Indians (3-3, 1-1) in a game at Simon Gratz.

Public League Class A

Troy Johnson scored on a pair of short touchdown runs and Prep Charter's defense forced five turnovers in a 12-0 win over Communications Tech at 11th & Bigler.

Johnson scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter and a 1-yard run in the fourth to put the game away for the Wolves (2-3, 1-1).

The Phoenix fell to 1-5, 0-2.
