Kingsway's Ley runs away from the pack

Kingsway's Chelsea Ley nearly cracked the elusive 18-minute barrier at Holmdel Park as she dominated the girls' competition yesterday in the Shore Coaches Invitational cross-country meet.

Ley won the Varsity B race in 18:03, crossing the finish line 1:04 ahead of her closest rival. She was 58 seconds faster than any other girl from around the state in the seven varsity races on the hilly 3.1-mile course in Lincroft.

Hillsborough's Ashley Smolinka won the Varsity A race in 19:01. Only seven girls have broken 18 minutes on the course, which is also used for the state championships.

Bishop Eustace won the Varsity E race with Holly Bischof placing third, Montana DiPietrantonio sixth, and Kelly Malloy ninth.

Seneca placed five runners between 11th and 30th to win the Varsity C team trophy, Wildwood Catholic's Tara Wuko was second in the Varsity F race, and Cherokee's Megan Lacy was second in the Varsity A race.

In the boys' competition, Miles Schoedler took the gold medal in the Varsity C race in 16:18 and helped Ocean City take the team title. Paul VI's Michael Rankin was second, three seconds behind Schoedler.

West Windsor-Plainsboro North's Joe Rosa shattered the course record in winning the Varsity B race in 15:04. Colts Neck's Craig Forys had set the previous mark of 15:15 in 2006.

Boys' Soccer

Kyle Lodge scored two goals and assisted on Max DiLeo's goal, powering Cinnaminson (4-2-1) to a 3-0 nonleague win over visiting Middle Township (5-2-1). Pirates goalie Kevin Lynch made eight saves.

In other nonleague action, Delran (6-2), ranked No. 2 in South Jersey by The Inquirer, blanked No. 9 Cherokee, 4-0, with two goals in the last three minutes at Cherokee (3-4-1). Ali Gocmez and Joe Hockimer had early goals before Mike Perreira scored on a penalty kick and Dominic Nocito converted a direct kick.

R. J. Biondi scored two goals and Joe Bertucci had a pair of assists, steering Eastern past visiting Gloucester Catholic, 4-1.

Burlington County. Brendan Reilly's goal from Brandon Papicka on a set play was all Holy Cross needed to get past visiting Maple Shade, 1-0.

Girls' Soccer

Clare MacAdams recorded a hat trick and Ashley Shackleford scored twice as Holy Cross padded its Patriot Division lead with a 5-1 win at Burlington County League rival Maple Shade.

Jaime Viggiano connected on a free kick for the Wildcats' lone goal, and teammate Krysten Gillan made 16 saves to keep the score respectable.

Nonleague. Christina Rietzen's goal five minutes into the second half provided enough cushion for Delran to hold off host Ewing, 2-1.

Field hockey

Junior Jamie Robinson increased her season total to 14 goals with a hat trick and two assists, highlighting seventh-ranked West Deptford's 6-0 rout of visiting Overbrook in a Colonial Conference clash.

Brooke Heininger stopped a penalty stroke in splitting time in the cage for the Eagles.

Nonleague. Aubrey Coleman scored from the top of the circle with less than five minutes to go in the first half, and Kingsway goalie Becca May came through with 20 saves to key the host Dragons' 1-0 upset of eighth-ranked Haddonfield.
