Copes picks George Washington
Imhotep Charter junior Erik Copes gave an oral commitment during the weekend to play for the George Washington University men's basketball team.
The 6-foot-8 post player's choice was not a surprise.
His uncle, Roland Houston, is an assistant coach at George Washington and has played a major role in Copes' life and his development on the court.
Imhotep Charter coach Andre Noble is elated with Copes' decision.
"I believe that when young people are choosing college, you really want to make sure that they are safe," Noble said. "You also want them around someone that will look out for them. Having [Houston] there will be a tremendous asset for Erik."
Copes averaged 2.5 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks on last season's team, which won the PIAA Class AA state championship. The defensive star had two points, 11 rebounds, and a game-high seven blocks in the 75-67 double-overtime victory over Pittsburgh North Catholic in the state final.
Copes went on an unofficial visit to George Washington last weekend. "We are super happy for Erik," Noble said.
