S. Jersey Girls: Garnets upset Hawks in tennis
While form held through most of yesterday's NJSIAA South Jersey girls' team tennis competition, seventh-seeded Haddon Heights pulled off a 3-2 upset of No. 2 seed Haddon Township in a Group 2 quarterfinal.
Jackie Hanley and Gina Baker came through with singles wins for the Garnets (14-5), while the tandem of Ashley Chiaradio and Rebekah Milsted prevailed at second doubles.
On the other side of the Group 2 bracket, top-seeded Haddonfield began its quest for the sectional crown by blanking No. 9 seed Woodstown, 5-0.
Catherine Senopoulos and Jocelyn Perry teamed up to take the first doubles match, 6-1, 6-0, while Rebecca Senopoulos and Taylor Noll cruised to a straight-sets victory at second doubles.
Haddonfield (22-2) will host a semifinal on Tuesday against fourth-seeded Buena (13-3), a 5-0 winner over Cinnaminson.
South Jersey Group 3. Top-seeded Moorestown improved to 14-4 by ousting No. 9 seed Kingsway, 5-0. Paulina Malts defeated Nicole Cisterino, 6-2, 6-1, at first singles to start the Quakers on their way.
Second-seeded Ocean City also coasted to a 5-0 win, eliminating No. 7 seed Seneca, to earn a semifinal date with Shawnee. The third-seeded Renegades dispatched Pinelands, 5-0, highlighted by a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 triumph at first doubles by Brooke Morgan and Dominique Falcone.
South Jersey Group 4. Fourth-seeded Millville kept its title hopes alive with a 4-1 quarterfinal win over fifth-seeded Eastern.
Nicole Tawes pulled out a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 victory at third singles for the Thunderbolts.
South Jersey Non-Public B. Defending sectional champion Moorestown Friends (13-5) earned the right to face top-seeded Ranney School in the semifinals, thanks to a 5-0 sweep of No. 5 seed Holy Cross.
Kiera Guerriere topped Margaret Fynan, 6-3, 6-1, at second singles for the fourth-seeded Foxes.
Central Jersey Group 1. New Egypt (6-4), the No. 4 seed, exited with a 5-0 loss to fifth-seeded Roselle Park.
