George Washington wins in boys' soccer

It didn't take long to realize the George Washington boys' soccer team would win yesterday.

The Eagles led by 2-0 in the 10th minute en route to a 3-0 Public League A Division victory over the Northeast Vikings.

The triumph at Charles Martin Memorial Stadium improved visiting Washington to 9-0-1 overall and 8-0 in the division. Northeast (6-3, 6-3), however, has lost two of its last three contests.

"We were trying to score three goals in the first half," Eagles senior striker Guy Sikpa said of his team's explosive start. "We wanted to shut the whole game down so they wouldn't be able to come back."

In the process, Sikpa recorded the game's first goal before several fans were able to get in their seats.

He gained possession around the net after a corner kick and scored in the fourth minute. Washington went ahead by 2-0 on midfielder Pavel Surmach's goal from 25 yards out in the 10th minute.

Victor Obassy added the Eagles' final score early in the second half.

Northeast was without standout goalkeeper Tim Freiling, who suffered a knee injury Monday against Bartram. The senior will be sidelined for the rest of the regular season. Freiling is also a standout placekicker and punter on the Vikings' football team.

George Washington 2 1 - 3

Northeast 0 0 - 0

Goals: GW–Guy Sikpa, Pavel Surmach, Victor Obassy.

Saves: GW–Mario Martins 5; NE–Jose Rosario 7.
