Pa. Girls: Abington upends Radnor in tennis
Abington provided the upset of the day in the District 1 Class AAA tennis quarterfinals yesterday.
The sixth-seeded Ghosts beat host and No. 3 Radnor, 3-2, one week after losing to the same team, 6-1, in the regular season.
"The girls absolutely came ready to play," Abington coach Kristy Heyser said.
Abington did it by taking third singles and both of the doubles matches. Last week, in a seven-game format, Abington won only one of the three doubles matches.
The Abington singles winner was Laura Delbeccaro. The doubles teams of Lauren Stern and Gabby Njirjesy (No. 1) and Amy Schafer and Tamara Hass (No. 2) also won for the Ghosts.
Abington will host a Tuesday semifinal against Wissahickon.
Pennsbury travels to Conestoga for another semifinal.
By winning, the Ghosts qualified for the state tournament for the second straight year.
Wissahickon earned its spot with a 3-2 win over Upper Dublin as Sam Stutman and Anne Marie Devlin outlasted Alice Laughlin and Mary Shang, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) at first doubles.
Conestoga, the No. 5 seed, topped host and No. 4 Council Rock North, 4-1, as Kip Klinger and Jen Ciotti earned victories at second and third singles.
The only win for the Indians came at first singles where Julie Shursky topped Kirsten Boyer, 6-0, 6-3.
Danielle Raftery and Paige Deiner earned a three-set win at first doubles to give Pennsbury a 3-2 win at Lower Merion. Raftery and Deiner outlasted Emily Levyn and Xiun Liu, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Class AA. Top-seeded Harriton earned another date in the final with a 5-0 win over visiting New Hope-Solebury.
The Rams got singles wins from Casey Robinson, Anna Matlack and Morgan Frechie.
Public. Kiara Smith's 6-0, 6-0 win over Oly Popili at first singles was the highlight of Northeast's 5-0 win over visiting Washington, completing an unbeaten regular season for the Vikings (10-0).
