Villa Maria blanks Mount St. Joseph in field hockey
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.
That was Villa Maria Academy's philosophy in a big Athletic Association of Catholic Academies field hockey game with Mount St. Joseph yesterday.
It took the Hurricanes four offensive penalty corners within a span of 11/2 minutes before they connected for a goal late in the second half for a 1-0 win.
Katie Briglia scored the goal, her seventh of the season, with 2 minutes, 33 seconds left to play at Villa. Just 30 seconds before, a shot by Briglia was deflected by the Magic defense.
"We just had to keep our composure and keep at it," Briglia said.
Some of Villa's frustration came from Magic goalie Cat Matchett. She finished with 10 saves, while the Hurricanes boasted a 16-4 edge in corners.
"I thought their goalie did a great job," said Hurricanes coach Maurene Polley.
The win put the Hurricanes (11-1-1 overall) within one game of capturing the regular-season league championship with two games to play. Villa is 10-0-1 in league play. The tie came against Merion Mercy.
The Magic (11-3 overall), who also have two league games left, are 9-2 with both losses to Villa. The league's postseason tournament begins Oct. 14, with the finals set for Oct. 18 at Cabrini College.
