Coaches vs. Cancer basketball clinic tomorrow
Germantown Academy will host its fourth annual Coaches vs. Cancer Basketball Coaches Clinic tomorrow, and the organizers will have memories of close friends in their hearts as they work.
This year's event is being held in memory of Danny Craige, the longtime GA boys' assistant coach who lost his bout with cancer on June 7, 2006.
The Germantown Academy family also lost another loved one to cancer this summer. Ben Shervin, 84, died June 3.
"He played hoops all the way up to when he was 75," said Jim Fenerty, the Patriots' athletic director and varsity boys' basketball coach. "The last 15 years, he had been coaching our middle school team. The [current] seniors, he coached them in the sixth and seventh grades. . . . He was coaching until he was 83.
"I'm hoping that one day we will not have to run clinics for this anymore, because cancer will be beaten."
The clinic is open to boys' and girls' coaches at the youth, AAU, high school and college levels.
Four coaches will be guest speakers: Joe Mihalich of Niagara University, Fran O'Hanlon of Lafayette, Herb Magee of Philadelphia University, and John Miller of Mount St. Joseph.
"This year, I feel really fortunate," said Fenerty, noting that all the speakers have Philadelphia roots.
Miller coached the Archbishop Ryan boys and La Salle University women before taking over at the Mount. He will lecture on pressure defense.
Mihalich, who has a 179-123 record in 10 seasons at Niagara, will talk about the fastbreak and secondary offense.
O'Hanlon, who will begin his 14th season at Lafayette, will concentrate on the passing offense.
And Magee, who has an NCAA Division II record of 855 career wins, will focus on shooting.
Registration is $50 per coach. Walk-ups are welcome. For information, contact Fenerty at 215-260-4363.
