Frankford faces tougher test tonight
Frankford may be a football power in Public League circles, but the respect for the Pioneers outside the city limits has not been overwhelming.
That may have changed somewhat last week, when the squad hit the road and knocked off Hatboro-Horsham, 14-7.
"We worked hard for it," Frankford coach Mike Capriotti said. "I was really pleased with how we were able to hang with them in the fourth quarter."
Trailing by 7-6 with about five minutes left to play, junior tailback Zaire Anderson found a seam in Hatboro-Horsham's defense and raced 81 yards for the winning score. Key blocks on the play came from tackle Ron Corr, guard Ed Farrell, and tight end Joe Buck.
A defense that held the Hatters to a touchdown was led by cornerbacks Kalif Walker and Tyrell Martin, tackles Akeem Smith (6-foot-4, 280 pounds) and Tauheed Smith (6-5, 360), and safety Chris Baker.
Another talent-filled suburban foe, Pennsbury, is on tap tonight at 7.
The Falcons, of the Suburban One League National Conference, lead the series, 4-0. They have outscored the Pioneers, 112-27.
Tribute to Angelo. Speaking of Frankford, the Pioneers will honor former coaching legend Al Angelo at halftime of their Sept. 13 home game versus Abraham Lincoln. A memorial will be unveiled at the north end (Dyre Street) of their stadium.
Angelo, who compiled a 184-39-5 record at Frankford in two stints (1965-84, 1987), died in April from pancreatic cancer.
The 77-year-old was living in Seaville, N.J., outside Ocean City.
Lions vs. Jaguars. Fresh off beating Strath Haven for the first time in 21 years, Penncrest will battle vaunted Garnet Valley in a Central League clash tonight.
In last week's surprising 14-0 win, Penncrest's split-back veer offense totaled 250 yards on the ground. Junior running back Jerry Boyer led the way, with 103 yards on 15 carries.
The offensive line was keyed by center Chris Quintans, guard Nick Barbieri, and tackle Jon Young.
The Lions' defense is headed by Boyer, a middle linebacker, outside linebacker Rick Bailey, cornerback Phil Barbieri, and free safety Tyriq Kershaw.
Phil Barbieri and Kershaw had interceptions versus Strath Haven.

"He's got a great combination of size and speed. He's also super-mature. He's like 18 going on 28."
